In the last 30 years, there has been a rise in environmental awareness that has fundamentally changed the way airport development projects are undertaken. In the US, since the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the process of approval of major airport development now requires extensive quantitative evaluation of the aeronautical, environmental, and economic consequences of a broad spectrum of options. Concern over environmental issues, in particular noise and air emissions, has become one of the greatest hurdles to implementing new development at airports. Consequently, much of our environmental work is focused on gaining environmental approvals for airport development projects by preparing project assessments.

L&B`s understanding of noise problems and extensive work in the field contributes significantly to our ability to assist airport operators in the development of aeronautically implementable noise compatibility plans.

The Noise Control Engineering Services are divided into the following categories: community noise studies, industrial noise control, and vibration and dynamic analysis. All noise control studies involve analyzing or projecting the noise levels generated by a source, determining the level of reduction desired, and finally engineering a solution to achieve the criterion levels. Our experience and technical capabilities form a strong foundation upon which policies to minimize noise and land-use conflicts can be developed.

L&B`s team of professionals is able to conduct all types of air emissions inventories and air dispersion analyses, as well as, hazardous air pollutant analyses and human health risk assessments. Our planners have extensive experience developing air emission inventories, focusing on emission sources that are unique to airports such as aircraft engines, ground support equipment (GSE), and auxiliary power units (APU). We focus on early and extensive air quality coordination to ensure a thorough and comprehensive review of air quality. As a result, our analyses have withstood the most rigorous legal challenges.
