Marine Surveying & Monitoring

Marine Surveying and Monitoring

At Marine Ecological Solutions we can either plan a full marine survey of what lives on the sea bed, provide trained marine biologists to assist with a survey, or simply undertake routine monitoring of a site year in, year out. Most of our recent survey work has been in UK waters, but our team also has working experience in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean

Intertidal, or Beach, Surveys

Marine EcoSol organises bespoke beach surveys of habitats, biotopes or species, tailored to each clients requirements. Often a developer, EIA or countryside agency will require an `intertidal survey` of what lives on a beach of interest. The intertidal is the area of shore between the highest and lowest astronomical tides. It includes rocky shores, sandy beaches, saltmarshes and estuaries. Our tailored surveys can search for a specific species or habitat of interest (for instance, a UK marine BAP habitat or species), undertake an MNCR Phase 2 style biotope exercise, or we can even work with our associates to produce exhaustive species lists of what lives on your beach.

Subtidal Monitoring

Our tailored diving surveys can search for a specific species or habitat of interest (for instance, a UK marine BAP habitat or species) or undertake an MNCR Phase 2 style biotope exercise. Depending on your needs, we can even work with our associates to produce exhaustive species lists of what lives in your area of interest, be it for conservation of development purposes. Subtidal surveying is a challenge, but our experienced team of marine ecologists and divers make it happen. Our surveyors are familiar with various industry standard methodologies, but can adapt their methods to suit your needs. Marine EcoSol can either provide individual scientific divers, or as an HSE registered diving contractor, we can also organise the logistics and planning of your full biological survey team.

Underwater Photography / Video, and Analysis

Here at Marine EcoSol we work with experienced underwater photographers and videographers to produce high quality underwater photos and video footage. Marine EcoSol has experience in various fields of underwater photo and video projects, from filming underwater footage for media purposes to subtidal diver video quadrat surveys and drop down video tows. We also provide expert analysis of video and photo footage, identifying species and habitats for clients in addition to other tailored requests.

In-Situ identification

As part of a development, EIA or planning application you may be required to undertake a biotope or habitat classification of what lives on the seabed, or simply look for a habitat or species of conservation concern (for example UK Marine BAP habitats and species) at your site. Marine EcoSol can provide highly skilled marine biologists, with years of experience surveying and diving in U.K waters for surveys of habitats and species in and out of the water.

Acoustic Remote Sensing of Marine Habitats

Our close associate, Jack Egerton of Echology, specialises in acoustics survey which sometimes augments our survey capabilities for clients. Equipment knowledge includes; Biosonics DTX Split Beam Fisheries Echosounder, Sidescan sonar, AGDS, Simrad ES60 echosounder, Geoswath multibeam.

Marine Education/Interpretation

Marine Education/Interpretation

We at Marine EcoSol believe that education on the marine environment is a vital part of marine conservation; especially encouraging young people to take an active role in protecting their coastline and U.K marine life. This may involve taking school groups out to the beach to conduct simple beach cleans and surveys, to producing volunteer survey methodology packs and resource materials.

Media Diving

Marine EcoSol can provide project management for underwater productions as well as supervisors, divers, and safety support. All Marine EcoSol divers are Professional Scuba Divers able to meet with the HSE Media ACOP to assist with underwater media productions. Marine EcoSol has worked with a variety of production companies (Tiger, Aden, Antena, Cwmni Da, as well as the BBC), and is always happy to answer any questions you may have on safety/logistical requirements for filming in, around and under the water. Marine EcoSol has its own broadcast quality HD underwater video equipment which it uses with a selection of underwater cameramen when co-ordinating a media dive team. We also have our own full face masks with underwater communications where voice over and piece to camera is required.
