MBDC is the CradletoCradleCertified-NoLeveloriginator of the Cradle to Cradle design framework, and it has been working with clients since 1995 to apply these principles to create sustainable growth. In 2005, MBDC created the Cradle to Cradle Certified program to help companies measure their progress and communicate their accomplishments. Five years after launching the program, MBDC owners William McDonough & Dr. Michael Braungart founded the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII) to take over administration of the certification program. C2CPII now independently manages the certification program as a third party and MBDC continues to work with certification clients as an accredited assessment body.

A Cradle to Cradle inspired building would include materials that are safe and healthy for humans and the environment and can be easily disassembled and cycled into new products.  The Cradle to Cradle Certified program is helping architects and building professionals identify products that are designed using the Cradle to Cradle philosophy.  While the program is growing quickly, there is not a certified product in every building product category.  Architects and specifiers are challenged with how to select materials that may best meet Cradle to Cradle standards when no certified option exists.
