Built Environment Services
A Cradle to Cradle inspired building would include materials that are safe and healthy for humans and the environment and can be easily disassembled and cycled into new products. The Cradle to Cradle Certified program is helping architects and building professionals identify products that are designed using the Cradle to Cradle philosophy. While the program is growing quickly, there is not a certified product in every building product category. Architects and specifiers are challenged with how to select materials that may best meet Cradle to Cradle standards when no certified option exists.
MBDC is providing product specification support on building projects for which the goal is to have a Cradle to Cradle inspired building. This service, also referred to as the Internal Check for Cradle to Cradle Potential, provides quick feedback on the Cradle to Cradle potential of products based on publicly available information. This screen provides building professionals with guidance in selecting the most sustainable products for a project and provides an analysis of each product in the categories of Human Health, Ecological Health, Nutrient Potential, Recycled/Renewable Content, and Energy Strategy, and Social Fairness to create a system for comparison. Upon completion of this Internal Check for Cradle to Cradle Potential, the client receives a report summarizing the results of MBDC’s review.
Communications Guidelines for the Building Product Screening:
The results of this report are intended to aid building professionals in their choice of building materials when a Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM product is not immediately available or viable for the intended use. The report is intended to be shared only with project stakeholders and the review of the products are not equivalent to an assessment for the Cradle to Cradle Certified program. The results do not render the product(s) either approved or endorsed by MBDC. Any reviewed product can not be described as Cradle to Cradle or Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM. Only products audited by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute may carry the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM marks under license. Marketing materials for reviewed products may not mention this evaluation by MBDC without permission. This exercise can provide a product manufacturer with initial feedback to gauge a product’s fit for certification, and if you are interested in pursuing certification you can contact MBDC to pursue next steps. Please visit the Cradle to Cradle Certified Program page to find out the steps required to have a product certified.
