National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)
New Zealand`s leading provider of atmospheric and aquatic science and associated commercial services. Our mission is to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand’s atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources. Established in 1992 as one of nine New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), NIWA is a stand-alone company with its own board of directors and its shares held by the Crown.
NIWA has a staff of around 680, annual revenue of around $114 million derived from competition-based research grants and commercial enterprise, and assets of around $74 million (figures from 2007 Annual Report). Our science provides the basis for sustainable resource management, and our consultancy services help clients solve problems on the use and management of atmosphere & climate, coasts & oceans, freshwater, fisheries, and aquaculture.
