Environmental Management Service
Nepid provides a wide range of environmental management services, mostly related to biodiversity specialist inputs for development projects. Assignments undertaken have ranged from short-term (3 days); to longer- term (3 year) projects involving multidisciplinary teams of specialists. Nepid coordinates the inputs, budgets and logistics of team members; ensures quality through a variety of quality control procedures; and liaises with stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
Aquatic Ecology Service
Nepid provides specialist services in freshwater aquatic ecosystem assessments, including impact assessments, mitigation, monitoring and restoration. Assignments undertaken have ranged from site-specific surveys (e.g. impacts of dams and mines); to large-scale river basin planning studies involving multidisciplinary teams of specialists. The company has a variety of aquatic survey equipment including current speed recorders, temperature data loggers, electrofishers, fyke nets etc. The company also provides training is SASS5 river health biomonitoring.
Terrestrial Ecology Service
Nepid provides specialist services in assessing the environmental impacts of development on terrestrial ecosystems (flora and fauna); designing mitigation strategies and undertaking relevant monitoring. The company has access to a range of faunal survey equipment, including Sherman traps, pitfall traps, harp traps, bat detectors, spotlights etc.
Culverts and Causeways Service
Nepid provides specialist services in the assessment of culverts and causeways. In South Africa a Water Use Licence is needed to alter the bed, banks, course or characteristics of a watercourse (National Water Act No. 36 of 1998: Section 21(i)). Badly designed culverts and causeways can have serious negative impacts on river and stream ecosystems because of increased risks of erosion, flooding and because they tend to block the natural movements of aquatic biota, particularly fish.
