Z-shaped sheet piles are called Zs because the single piles are shaped roughly like a horizontally stretched Z. The interlocks are located as far away from the neutral axis as possible to ensure good shear transmission and increase the strength-to-weight ratio. Bearing piles are required when a structure cannot be founded on a shallow foundation. Tall structures, for example, often require deep foundations based on engineering principles. In other cases, the soils near the surface may not have the strength to support the structure. Thus, a deep foundation system must be designed to transfer the foundation loads down through the steel piles to carry the load.

The Pipe-Z System is composed of large diameter pipe, C 9 connectors, and AZ intermediary piles. The AZ sheets transfer pressure to the pipe which carries most of the load. The pipe is available in many sizes and on large projects can be specifically ordered to fit the exact needs of the project.

Sheet piles can be plated to increase their strength. Usually four plates are attached to the outside of the flanges of a Z pile. The plates can be composed of many different lengths, widths, and thicknesses. The width and thickness of the plate should be governed by the need for either higher strength or stiffness. The plates do not have to be the full length of the pile; they only need to cover the portion of the sheet that would not normally be able to handle high loads.
