The “Ala Wai Canal Flood Risk Management Project” was launched several years ago by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to address the increasing risk of high-impact storm and flooding events in the Ala Wai watershed. Flash-flooding conditions can materialize within an hour in the upper portion of the Ala Wai watershed, creating significant damage downstream. USACE estimates a major flood in the watershed could damage 3,000 structures and cost more than $1.14 billion.

Oceanit designed permanent physical best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the pollutant load to Salt Lake. Stormwater laden with sediment and trash flows to Salt Lake, a 42-acre lake near the Honolulu Airport, degrading the water quality of the lake. Oceanit was selected by the COE to design permanent physical best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the pollutant load to the lake. The schedule for the project was very tight because funding was set to expire within three months after the project start date. In order to meet the tight project schedule, Oceanit mobilized a highly skilled and experienced team to complete all required design elements.

Oceanit scientists are working at the cutting edge of collaborative visualization environments and data aggregation technologies. Partnering with collaborators such as the University of Hawaii’s LAVA Flow laboratory, we are building and using technologies akin to Tony Stark’s holographic interfaces from the Avengers and Iron Man movies. Oceanit uses proprietary tools such as LAVA (Large Data Aggregation Visualization and Analysis) framework to analyze and demystify large volumes of data. LAVA is a flexible platform originally designed for solving difficult image processing problems for military applications, but has been extended to solve big data issues across other industries.

Data analytics is the operation of analyzing heaps of raw data in order to tease out insights and make conclusions about that data. Data analysis can reveal trends and metrics that may otherwise have been lost in the mass of raw data information. The insights and conclusions from this information can then be used to optimize processes to increase the overall efficiency of a business or system. At Oceanit, our Innovation Consulting team has worked with both government and private sector clients to intake, process, analyze, and garner insights from the massive amounts of data collected by our clients.
