Remote Sensing: Andy Oldroyd, Technical Director
Andy has over 15 years experience in instrumentation, and is well versed in the requirements of building individual instrumentation campaigns to meet client requirements and expectations. For the last 9 years Andy has specialised in the wind industry sector. During this time Andy has delivered many bespoke campaigns using novel instrumentation solutions with a focus on traceability. Whether it is a met mast based solution or a solution based on remote sensing, Andy is able to deliver a quality led data campaign which will provide data with the lowest possible uncertainty. Andy is instrumental in developing best practice standards at IEA level for both LiDAR and SODAR, Coordinator of the EC FP7 programme NORSEWInD and is an active member of the UK wind resource group.
Wind Data Analysis: Chris Arnott, Analyst
Chris is responsible for internal software development and time series analysis of wind data. Chris has worked on RS deployment and met mast data analysis, particularly looking at the QA of incoming client data and appropriate database archiving of the data for later retrieval. More recently Chris has started to investigate more robust uncertainty calculations for horizontal wind speed uncertainty in large offshore wind developments, and continues to support clients with bespoke analysis requests and detailed technical support.
Instrumentation: Erik Brown, Instrumentation Engineer
Erik is in charge of instrumentation led projects within Oldbaum. Working currently on both the NAREC and EAOW projects, Erik is working on the detailed design, paying particular attention to connectivity (IT & Power) and instrument layout. Erik has also supported projects in “out of scope” work, where Oldbaum were asked to provide a CCTV system design and suggested camera layout, as well as looking at extending the data acquisition system to support fault signal capture and power management to prolong the battery life of the platform in the event of a primary power failure. In addition to mast work, Erik is also responsible for Oldbaum’s wind tunnel programme, where cups are tested according to Oldbaum’s ISO17025 accreditation.
Wind Resource Analysis: Poushali Maji, Analyst
Poushali works on our wind resource data analysis and wind farm layout design onshore and offshore. Poushali has been working with our clients to develop array design strategies to create optimal layouts to minimise the critical area of wind farm wakes, especially offshore. Poushali’s work with Oldbaum has taken our expertise worldwide with successful project completion in Europe, Brazil and India, where her work within Oldbaum has helped define array layout, and successfully support our clients in Federal PPA licensing.
NORSEWInD – Oldbaum and partners leading the way offshore
Wind speed data is key to all wind energy developments, but what happens when you are kilometres offshore with no real wind speed reference?
Through our work in DOWNVInD and with partners in remote sensing, Oldbaum identified that it was possible to create a project on a large scale to develop wind atlases offshore using physical data as opposed to modelled data.
The result is NORSEWInD, Coordinated by Oldbaum Services.
NORSEWInD is an 8 million euro project partly funded under the European Commission FP7 programme (3.9 million Euros).
NORSEWInD has built a consortium of leading wind energy technology experts to create an offshore instrumentation network consisting of around 30 data points throughout the North, Irish and Baltic seas.
This highly detailed point measurement data is used to calibrate satellite based remote sensing (QuikScat; ASAR; SSM/I) to create wide area, hub height maps, suitable for use in the wind industry, giving vital early data on local wind conditions.
