Origen was founded by leading experts in carbon removal and industrial technology, with a focus on utilizing limestone to permanently sequester CO2 and mitigate climate change. They pioneered the initial version of Origen's technology, demonstrating that limestone-based direct air capture (DAC) could effectively remove billions of tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. Currently, Origen is set to scale up limestone-based carbon removal efforts. In recent years, the company has established an industrial scale pilot, a research and development facility, and forged commercial partnerships with industry leaders to advance the next generation of DAC. As DAC and carbon removal are now seen as indispensable for combating climate change, Origen's future growth will aim to significantly reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Origen supports the COP28 agreement to phase out fossil fuels by 2050, and recognizes the challenges of transitioning the energy system while scaling low-cost, scalable carbon removal technologies. Initially, the company’s technology is compatible with natural gas, capturing all emissions during combustion. Origen is dedicated to shifting to non-fossil fuels and has outlined a technology roadmap to explore biogas/biomethane, green hydrogen, and electrification options as markets develop.
