Pöyry is an international consulting and engineering company. We serve clients globally across the energy and industrial sectors and locally in our core markets. We deliver strategic advisory and engineering services, underpinned by strong project implementation capability and expertise. Our focus sectors are power generation, transmission & distribution, forest industry, chemicals & biorefining, mining & metals, transportation, water and real estate sectors. Pöyry has an extensive local office network employing about 7,000 experts. Pöyry's net sales in 2012 were EUR 775 million and the company's shares are quoted on NASDAQ OMX Helsinki (Pöyry PLC: POY1V).
The Pöyry story began in 1958 when over the course of one night Dr Jaakko Pöyry agreed to do the basic engineering for the Äänekoski sulphate pulp mill in Finland. From that night on Pöyry grew. First to Sweden and the other Nordic countries followed by Europe, the Americas and eventually to the rest of the world. By its tenth anniversary, the company had produced nearly 10 000 drawings and had a staff of more than 100. And by its twentieth anniversary the company had produced more than 75 000 drawings and had a staff of more than 1000.
As the company grew the culture did too. But what set Pöyry apart already in the early years was integrity. Clients could always count on Pöyry engineers and consultants for advice. The advice was honest and straightforward - always the best, most thought out advice available.
It wasn't until 1993 when Soil & Water and Ekono Energy joined Pöyry that the company began to expand its roots by creating synergies between its forest industry knowledge and the energy and environment industries. Soil & Water's roots date back to 1949 and Ekono's back to 1911.
By the end of 1990s, Pöyry had diversified even more. It was now a publicly listed company and thanks to joining forces with Electrowatt Engineering, Pöyry had even stronger references in variety of sectors. Electrowatt Engineering dates back as far as 1898 with impressive references such as the Rheinfelden Power Station and the Gotthard base tunnel.
Since 2000, Pöyry developed a wave of new competencies in energy, water and environment, transportation and construction services. It expanded its local office network into ~50 countries.
In 2013, Pöyry further evolved its business. It increased its local focus in key domestic markets, setting up a distinct Regional Operations business. The move provided a better platform to serve the many small to medium-sized client assignments received. It also took important steps to expand its industry and energy positions, establishing clear global competence lines in: pulp & paper, mining & metals, chemicals & biorefining, hydro-power, thermal power, nuclear power, renewables and transmission & distribution areas.

Pöyry's vision is to be the global thought leader in engineering balanced sustainability for a complex world.
A sustainable world will not happen by itself. It must be created and new engineering solutions need to be developed. This is where Pöyry will contribute and make a real difference.

Balanced sustainability is a holistic, multidimensional approach to sustainability that we apply in everything we do. It strives to achieve a balance between economic, environmental and social dimensions, as most appropriate to the nature of the project and where in the world we are working.
Complex world means that our clients are confronted with increasing demands for sustainable solutions and rapid technological development. Our role is to convey an insightful perspective and a comprehensive view. We will anticipate solutions for a complex world, being one step ahead. Managing multifaceted and complicated projects is our competitive advantage.
At Pöyry, corporate responsibility describes the economic, social and environmental responsibility as well as the use of the highest ethical standards in all our operations. The aim is that Pöyry will be recognised as a forerunner creating expectations and showing thought leadership in the context of Corporate Responsibility.
In 2010, Pöyry’s ESG-approach (Environmental, Social, Governance) was compiled into a Corporate Responsibility Policy. The policy sets the framework, through which Pöyry as a company is committed to incorporate social and environmental considerations into its organisational governance and decision-making processes. Defining the material sustainability aspects for Pöyry
We are committed to providing our clients with solutions that respect all angles of sustainability in a balanced way. We also want to manage and develop our own operations in a sustainable and responsible manner, and our business conduct is always based on the highest ethical business standards as defined in the Pöyry Code of Conduct. We have zero tolerance for corruption, bribery, anti-competitive practices, discrimination or harassment of any kind in our work.
In 2011, we conducted a stakeholder survey in order to identify what is relevant and significant for Pöyry to address in the context of corporate responsibility. We received 230 answers. Sustainability and responsibility aspects are essential in all of Pöyry’s operations but the conclusion from the survey was that Pöyry people valued very highly the responsibility aspects that relate to Pöyry’s own operations, whereas the external respondents expect us to pay attention to sustainability in our project operations.
The results of the stakeholder survey are condensed into four themes that create the basis for Pöyry’s corporate responsibility
- Responsible business
- Employer responsibility
- Environmental awareness in own operations
- Sustainability in project work
The Group Executive Committee reviewed the resulting materiality matrix and the resulting roadmap for Pöyry’s corporate responsibility approach is developed and implemented based on this.
