Purex International Ltd commenced trading as Hi-Tech Telecom in 1985. The business was established by Phil and Jill Mullins and Rob Turner who, at that time, had a specific interest in the telecommunications sector. During 1988 the company diversified into selling a third party's fume extraction equipment and changed it's name to Hi-Tech UK.

The following year the company began to manufacture it's own machines under the brand name 'Purex'.

1990 saw a change in factory legislation, making it a legal requirement to control hazardous fumes in the workplace. Purex International not only satisfied the statutory requirements, they made a range of innovative machines which enabled fumes to be purified and re-circulated back into the factory, unlike competitors' products which discharged hazardous fumes directly to atmosphere, wasting energy and causing environmental pollution. Purex machines are now standard equipment throughout the electronics and laser and printing industries.

Purex International was amongst the first companies to fit out entire electronics factories such as Celestica with fully internally recycled extraction. This meant that bulky ductwork and holes in roofs and walls were no longer required for fume extractors. The factory managers could also move Purex machines and production lines around easily without having to re-site expensive ductwork.

In 1997, operations were transferred to the current, purpose-built site, benefiting from a 10 year Enterprise Zone Status.

After over a decade of successfully developing and increasing sales of the Purex product, the company changed it's name to Purex International LLP. The 8000 series of machines were launched, including such innovative features as 'flow control', gas and particle sensors, real-time airflow monitoring and interfacing options.

In June 2004 the company was purchased by Domino Printing Sciences, a multi-national PLC that manufactures printing and laser marking equipment. This year also saw the introduction of the 9000 range of machines with the Digital control system and blue graphic display.

2005 saw the expansion of Purex in the USA and a dedicated sales, service and warehouse facility now employing four people was opened in Gurnee, Illinois to further support customers and distributors in the US market.

In 2008 the company acquired PAT Technology Systems Inc, a highly renowned designer and manufacturer of fume extraction systems for the wide format inkjet printing industry. Their latest development, the innovative CaptivairTM system, is designed to remove all of the odours created by wide format inkjet printing equipment. The company has developed solutions for all the major printer manufacturers including Mimaki, Roland, Seiko, HP, Vutek and Mutoh.

2009 saw Purex complete a product range review exercise to make it even simpler for customers to buy fume extractors. The company also launched a brand new catalogue and a website which allowed customers to buy fume extraction equipment and filters online for the first time. In this year the Captivair range of products were integrated into the Purex family and an exciting collaboration with Hull University commenced.

Purex International is now a market leader in its sector, working to the ISO 9001 quality standard. The business operates from a 20,000 sq ft facility in Manvers, Rotherham, approximately 50 miles from Manchester Airport and close to the M1 and A1 motorways. The company currently employs over 40 people in two countries, with forecast annual sales in excess of £6m.

Local and international health and safety legislation (such as COSHH, NIOSHH, OSHA etc) states that it is the employers responsibility to protect the health, welfare and safety of their employees. Failure to do so can result in expensive legal action, potential fines and poor employee relations.
