Flushability Testing

In recent years, an increased availability of disposable hygiene products has created the need to ensure that nonwoven products are safe for flushing and compatible with municipal wastewater treatment systems. According to the International Nonwovens and Disposables Association (INDA) & European Disposables and Nonwovens Associations (EDANA) guidelines, in order to be flushable, a product must: “Clear toilets and properly maintaiuned drainage pipe systems under expected product usage conditions; Be compatible with existing wastewater conveyance, treatment, reuse and siposal systems and; Become unrecognizable in a reasonable period of time and be safe in the natural receiving environments.” RespirTek services offer anaerobic and aerobic biodisintegration potential testing per INDA & EDANA standards for flushability. We are capable of conducting any of INDA & EDANA’s testing methods following their guidance documents for nonwoven consumer products.

Respirometry

Respirometry is a science that is used in determining the rates of degradation of any organic or biological material that releases quantifiable gases. Respirometric technology offers diverse array of applications for your wastewater, toxicity, bioremediation, biodegradation, and/or chemical degradation project needs. Respirometry is a scientific method of communicating with microbial communities by monitoring the respiration of microorganisms in real time. Media for the microorganism can vary in range from ground water or soil to a sewage treatment system or a composting system to almost anything that contains or could contain living organisms. Changes in contaminant concentrations are directly related to changes in respiration during respirometric monitoring and the basis of respirometric results.
