Founded in 1840 by Mr. Rodney Hunt, the company's earliest products were plows, simple wooden machines, and the wooden water wheels and gates used in New England’s textile mills. From the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, the Rodney Hunt Company expanded its product line to include textile manufacturing machinery, pumps, governors, and hydraulic and mechanical equipment that helped sustain the textile industry.
Surviving a major flood in 1936 and hurricane in 1938, the company grew significantly over the next decade, in part due to the increased demand for textile machinery and equipment during and after World War II. Rodney Hunt textile wet-finishing machines supplied an international market during this period, and Rodney Hunt sluice gates and other water control equipment were building a significant domestic market throughout the United States.
The strategic decision to focus on the design and manufacture of products serving the growing water control industry led to the sale of the textile wet-finishing division in 1975 and the industrial roll division in 1983. In 1991, Rodney Hunt Company purchased AC Valve, Inc. (previously the Valve Division of Allis-Chalmers Company), and expanded its comprehensive gate and valve product offering for water control applications.
In 1995, Rodney Hunt Company was acquired by GA Industries, a Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of valve solutions. Fontaine Industries, a leader in fabricated stainless steel slide gates, joined the union in 2009. The VAG Group, a global flow control solution provided headquartered in Mannheim, Germany, was added to the family in 2011. Together, we offer the most complete flow control package in the world for both open-channel and closed-conduit applications.
