Many facilities receive fines for improper management of hazardous waste. These fines are often due to improper waste determination. Instead of making the determination on site, facilities will ship wastes to a central location for determination which bypasses the site determination requirements. These wastes regulated under the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) can include pharmaceuticals, shampoos, cleaning agents and other chemicals. Hazardous waste also includes items that have been returned by customers such as nail polish, glue and other commonly used personal care products.

Universal Wastes are widely generated hazardous wastes such as batteries, fluorescent bulbs and other devices containing mercury. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reduced the regulatory requirements to encourage proper treatment and recycling, therefore allowing these wastes to be managed as Universal Wastes instead of Hazardous Wastes. The Universal Waste Rule, 40 CFR Part 237, allows states to modify the rule and add additional universal wastes, e.g. dental amalgam waste and pharmaceuticals, to their individual state regulations.

Individual state regulations, as well as volumes, usage, types of wastes, locations and mounting requirements, dictate container selection. Our sharps mailback systems include puncture-resistant, leak-proof sharps containers. We also offer systems designed to hold filled sharps containers and bags of soft waste. Our systems include the plastic container, prepaid shipping box, bag liners and tracking forms and meet or exceed all applicable regulations. In addition to our sharps mailback systems, we provide standard sharps containers for use with pickup or within our larger mailback systems.

Sharps Compliance provides the best in USPS-authorized medical waste mailback services for small to mid-size generators. When facilities generate larger quantities of biohazard waste that is not efficiently manageable with mailback, we offer a pickup service. This blended service model permits Sharps Compliance to match the right service at each location, resulting in cost-effective and efficient management programs.

Sharps Compliance provides DEA registrants with a simple and affordable reverse distribution solution for disposal of unused or expired controlled substances. We offer three convenient sizes (1.25-gallon, 2.5-gallon and 5-gallon) for collecting and returning pharmaceuticals for proper destruction. Reverse distribution is only available for DEA registrant`s inventory of medications and not intended for ultimate user medication disposal, hazardous pharmaceuticals or other biohazardous waste including sharps or soft waste.
