Today we are leading technological advances that will shape the performance of tomorrow’s products on markets like computing, telecommunications, automotive electronics, and lighting.

Striving to meet the challenges of energy efficiency and performance
Soitec leverages a strong portfolio of technologies and a high capacity for innovation to deliver enhanced performance and energy efficiency to the electronics and energy markets – some of tomorrow’s biggest challenges.
The pillars of Soitec’s corporate strategy
Soitec is a growth company. Our strategy hinges upon developing and industrializing new technologies and processes, which, when used alone or in combination, deliver decisive new levels of performance to the markets they target. Our business development strategy is built on three pillars:
Use our disruptive technologies to make products that become the new market standards
Soitec’s strategy is to rapidly penetrate new high-volume markets that typically have short production cycles and make our products tomorrow’s industry standards. To achieve this goal, we invest heavily in state-of-the art production facilities tailored to the markets we are targeting. We also have a highly-selective technology transfer policy based on licensing agreements with carefully-chosen industrial partners. Thanks to our licensing policy, Smart Cut™ SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator) based wafers represent over 80 percent (estimate) of the global SOI market.
Reach diverse markets likely to profit from our technological advances
Soitec products have applications on an increasingly diverse range of markets that include computers and gaming consoles; imagers; radio frequency components used in telephones, PCs and smartphones; on-board microelectronic components for the automotive industry; and concentrating photovoltaic solar panels.
We are also investing substantial resources to develop revolutionary materials for lighting and power electronics.
Regardless of the market, we focus our innovation efforts on differentiating technologies that add maximum value to end products.
Boost R&D through partnerships and shorten time-to-market
Soitec has developed a broad array of R&D partnerships with leading labs like CEA-Leti, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, UC Berkeley, and IMEC, as well as with our customers, many of whom are leaders in their industries. We are also active in industry organizations like competitive clusters, the SOI Industry Consortium, the CPV Consortium, Desertec and Medgrid.
Our goal is to leverage the synergies these partnerships generate to deliver breakthrough technologies that create new opportunities for our customers.
Soitec: Guided by values, driven by success
At Soitec, our performance — and successes — are built on our four core values: succeed together, merit trust, be audacious and commit to win.. True to the spirit of our company’s founders, these values are today shared by all Soitec employees. They serve as our compass, guiding our actions and decisions.
When a new employee joins the Soitec team, he or she learns about our values during the new employee orientation process. The Soitec values are also reflected in the expected behaviors included in the annual employee appraisal.
Living our values through excellence in customer relations
We express our commitment to the Soitec values in our relationships with our customers.
- Succeed together: We embrace teamwork and lasting relationships with our customers and stakeholders.
- Merit trust: We strive to earn the trust of our customers and stakeholders through win-win relationships. Honesty and integrity are at the heart of our business decisions.
- Be audacious: We envision the markets of tomorrow to achieve breakthroughs in technology for our customers and set new markets standards.
- Commit to win: We aspire to secure a leading and sustainable position in our markets, delivering trend-setting know-how through individual initiative and accountability.
Soitec headquarters: Firmly anchored in Grenoble, France’s high-tech ecosystem
Soitec headquarters, located in Bernin, France, enjoys a strong foothold in Grenoble's global micro-and nanotechnology innovation ecosystem. Our Bernin facility boasts an internationally-known R&D center dedicated entirely to innovative new semiconductor materials, the world’s largest SOI production facility, and the company’s support services.
Global manufacturing capacity
Soitec’s Grenoble, France production site
Our site in Bernin, France (just outside Grenoble) is the world's largest SOI production facility, with 4,500 m² (48,500 sq. feet) of clean rooms spread across three different plants:
- Bernin I went online in 1998, reaching full capacity in 2002. The plant houses silicon and 150 mm and 200 mm SOI wafer production and can produce up to 800,000 (200 mm-equivalent) wafers per year.
- Bernin II opened in 2002 and specializes in 300 mm wafers – today the microelectronics industry standard – and can produce 720,000 wafers annually.
- Bernin III focuses on 3D integration using our Smart Stacking™ process.
The Altatech production site in Montbonnot
Altatech MontbonnotCreated in 2004, Altatech Semiconductor manufactures highly efficient, cost effective inspection and CVD equipments used for manufacturing of Semiconductor, LEDs and Mems. With 1000 m² of clean room, the site offers high production capacity.
An innovation strategy focused on breakthrough technologies
Innovation is the key to our success at Soitec – it is part of who we are. Our company was founded to develop and commercialize a breakthrough process, our Smart Cut™ technology. Next came another major advance, our Smart Stacking™ technology. More recently, we added the leading-edge Concentrix™ concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) technology to our portfolio. From the founding of our company to our latest technologies, market-changing innovation has always been the pathway to success at Soitec.
We invest around 10% of our revenue in R&D to develop and perfect breakthrough materials technologies, with a special emphasis on SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator), SOQ (Silicon On Quartz), and III-V composites.
Innovation is how we lead, grow and maximize value through incremental and breakthrough solutions for the electronics and energy industries.
Backed by a finely-honed ability to anticipate market needs, we have amassed a robust pool of industrial property, penetrated mass markets with a highly differentiated product lineup, and expanded into new markets like automotive electronics, imaging, photovoltaics, and lighting.
R&D in collaboration with manufacturers
Our R&D teams work closely with manufacturers, as well as with publicly-funded laboratories such as CEA-Leti and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. We also take full advantage of the high-tech resources available in and around all of our locations worldwide: Grenoble, France (our headquarters) is a major European center for microelectronics and is home to leaders in education, research, and industry; Freiburg, Germany, where we also have operations, is home to the Fraunhofer Institute; and Phoenix, Arizona is a center for advanced epitaxy research.
