Coatings, sub-assemblies and consulting services from concept to production for products supporting remote sensing and miniature hand held FTIR. A long and distinguished history supplying components to JSLSCAD, Space flight thru NASA, and many commercially found IR applications. Customers such as BAE, Thermo and Steward Observatory have enjoyed a long supply history. BBAR for IR materials, protective anti-humidity for halides, solderable, thorium free, dichroic, and IR beamsplitters. We succeed when our customers succeed.
Spectral Systems was originally founded by Frank Wesley in 1983 as a 2-3 person operation making very special optics for infrared applications. In its infancy, the company focused primarily on providing optical polishing services to customers involved in infrared spectroscopy. These customers were delighted with the quality and service provided, which drove much of the early growth of the Company. Carlos Guajardo, one of our first employees, was instrumental in achieving this reputation.
In 1993 Spectral Systems relocated to its current headquarters, a 16,000 square foot facility located on the IBM East Fishkill, NY campus. This move provided access to a large infrastructure of technical expertise including IBM’s analytical services and on-site ISO tool calibration facility. This new facility allowed for expansion of the customer base to include world-wide markets.
In 1994, Frank dedicated his time to R&D activities and he hired Charles Anderson to grow the company into new business areas. It was during this time that Spectral Systems became the world leader in multi-layer infrared beamsplitters used to produce Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers (FTIR). In 2001, the opportunity was presented to purchase the Connecticut based optics shop from one of our major domestic customers. This purchase gave us about 20% in revenue growth and provided Spectral Systems with many new technical capabilities. At the same time, international sales growth accounted for more than 50% of the total business. Also at that time, Spectral Systems was sold to SensIR Technologies, an FTIR manufacturer focused on hazardous materials and homeland security markets.
In 2005, Bruce Capuano was hired as the new general manager of the business. Bruce brought many aspects of operational excellence and best practices to the manufacturing facilities, which enabled smooth and consistent growth in recent years. Also at that time, Spectral Systems, along with its parent SensIR Technologies, was sold to Smiths Detection, Inc. In 2012, Smiths Detection chose to divest of the Spectral Systems business and agreed to a buy-out of its assets by the Spectral Systems management team.
Today, Spectral Systems is a limited liability company where Frank, Bruce and Carlos continue to be committed to its future success. Joining the team as the President of the new Spectral Systems LLC is Scott Little, whose focus will be on new business development and future growth and success of the company. Our renewed focus as an independent business is a drive towards total customer satisfaction first, but also in placing a high value and respect for our fellow employees. Why are customers first? The only true worth of a company is what it delivers to its customers. Not the size of its profits. Not sales growth rate. Not fancy facilities. Only great customer relationships!!! Our philosophy is “We succeed when our customers succeed”.
