About Us
We have a passion for digital distribution (we are one of the leading publishers of online journals and eBooks) and are committed to distributing and making our journals as widely available as possible to not-for-profit institutions in developing countries.
Taylor & Francis Group publishes more than 2,700 journals and over 5,000 new books each year, with a books backlist in excess of 120,000 specialist titles. We are providers of quality information and knowledge that enable our customers to perform their jobs efficiently, enhance their education, and help contribute to the advancement of their chosen market sectors.
Taylor & Francis Group is part of Informa PLC which operates at the heart of the Knowledge and Information Economy. It is one of the world’s leading business intelligence, academic publishing, knowledge and events businesses. With more than 6,500 employees globally, it has a presence in all major geographies, including North America, South America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Corporate Responsibility
Taylor & Francis encourage every single member of staff to get involved with our CSR activities.
As a publisher, we take our responsibility to the environment very seriously, even though we are just as likely to be producing a digital product as a printed book or journal. In fact, in 2010 we were named ‘International Publisher of the Year’ by the International Printers’ Network in recognition of our pioneering use of digital printing technology to reduce our carbon footprint and improve delivery times to subscribers. All our UK production sites have been awarded FSC Chain of Custody - we are the first academic publisher in the UK to gain this accreditation.
We also put in a lot of time to promote reading and give access to our books and journals to those who need them. Routledge sponsors three of the National Literacy Trusts' key publications, which are mailed to over 25,000 UK schools. In addition, we've given access to our publications to people with print disabilities through both Bookshare and the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
Closer to home, we actively encourage our staff to engage with a charity or local community of their choice through our volunteer programme. And as a responsible employer, we regularly survey our employees to get their insight and feedback on what it is like to work for us. These surveys have shown we have a highly engaged and motivated group of employees and we share the survey results with our staff and, where possible, use them to develop the business further through appropriate initiatives.

Our history
For more than two centuries Taylor & Francis has been fully committed to the publication of scholarly information of the highest quality, and this remains our primary goal today.
The foundations of our company were laid in pioneering fashion when in 1798 Richard Taylor launched the Philosophical Magazine, one of the first scientific journals produced by an independent company. It was the start of many subsequent close collaborations with scholarly societies.
Dr William Francis, a chemist, joined Richard Taylor in 1852 and continued the tradition of the close links between the academic community and the company.
In 1936 Taylor & Francis became a private limited company with leading scientists as directors and shareholders. The last two decades have seen the most dramatic and rapid growth with the setting up of publishing and distribution centers around the world. This growth, fuelled by significant and strategic acquisition, led to a successful flotation of the Group on the London Stock Exchange in 1998. Shortly after the flotation, the Group more than doubled in size with the acquisition of the Routledge Group of companies.
In 2004 Taylor & Francis merged with Informa, and in 2005 consolidated its imprints. This led to such imprints as Carfax, Frank Cass, Marcel Dekker, Spon Press, Swets & Zeitlinger Publishers, amongst others, being incorporated into the CRC Press, Routledge or Taylor & Francis brands.
Taylor & Francis Group continues in its mission to publish the highest quality academic research and this has been reflected in the more recent acquisitions of Focal Press, Earthscan, Haworth Press, and Heldref Publications.
Taylor & Francis Group’s latest venture is Cogent OA, a new open access publisher taking an innovative approach to enhance article reach and impact.
In 2003, Routledge published a history of Taylor & Francis called The Lamp Of Learning: Taylor & Francis And Two Centuries Of Publishing.

Alongside this commitment to content, we are also passionate about conducting our business ethically and delivering on the wider priorities that we share with other sectors: bringing down our environmental footprint, building meaningful community partnerships and providing a great place to work.
