May. 16-18, 2023 Aberdeen

Geoscience underpins many aspects of the energy mix that fuels our planet and offers a range of solutions for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions as the world progresses towards net zero. The aim of this new Energy Geoscience Conference series is to explore and develop the contribution of geology and geophysics to the low-carbon energy transition. The meeting will be a key forum for sharing geoscientific aspects of energy supply as earth scientists grapple with the subsurface challenges of remaking the world’s energy system, balancing competing demands in achieving a low carbon future.Aberdeen has a world-leading role in the energy sector and vision to position itself as a climate positive city helping to lead the world towards net zero. It is the standout UK location to launch the first conference in this exciting new series: the Energy Geoscience Conference, EGC1 in 2023.

The talk will cover two exciting projects aimed to better understand how heat can be recovered and stored in the subsurface. Case studies from two `geo energy observatories` will be presented. The first is the `Cardiff Urban Geo Observatory` a city scale project characterising a shallow sand and gravel aquifer, underlain by Mercia Mudstone. Using 3D geological models and hydrogeological model, complemented with an operational pilot open loop ground source heat pump scheme the project takes a city scale approach to better understand how heat can be recovered and stored below ground. The second project is the `UKGEOS` Glasgow project where multiple boreholes have been installed into flooded mine workings, the infrastructure is open to the wider scientific community and will be at the forefront of studying the use of mine water energy.

Oct. 6-7, 2021 London

he Southern South Atlantic has seen a significant increase in exploration in recent years. Discoveries have been made in the Malvinas/ Falkland basin, South Africa and offshore Argentina has been the subject of a successful license round. This two-day conference aims to bring together both academic and industry geoscientists to discuss the current state of understanding of the geology and petroleum systems in this emerging petroleum province. Topics ranging from plate- to prospect-scale will be covered.

Sep. 28-30, 2021 Burlington

The prediction of viable petroleum systems is critical to meet the growing energy demand. At the same time, the energy sector is shifting from traditional hydrocarbon to alternatives, and new disciplines such as carbon capture and storage are emerging. This meeting will discuss the importance of Basin and Petroleum System Modelling (BPSM) in exploration and evaluation of resources, focussing on best practices, recent developments, novel applications, and opportunities for the future. New and improved digital capabilities have enabled a more integrated approach to analysis; therefore, the impact of newly available data and technologies in BPSM will be reviewed.
