Product Development - Our Innovation Team works closely with customers as partners in the development of new products. The Initiator Team focuses on becoming experts in the processes and key application areas of our customers. That way, we can actively work to deliver new ideas that can benefit the entire value chain.
Organic Peroxides, Persulfates and many other active oxygen derivatives are classified dangerous goods. United Initiators's history with handling active oxygen derivatives dates back to the beginning of last century. Since then we are committed to safety in all aspects in the life cycle of our products:
- production, packaging and storage at our plants all over the world
- transport to distributors, warehouses and customer sites
- storage, handling, application at the customers
- guidance in case of incidents like spillage or decomposition
- participation in committees on UN regulation, toxicology, HPV Working groups etc.
Safety is the foundation of our business.
As a result of the high activity of organic peroxides and persulfates as radical initiators these dangerous goods are often limited in the maximum packaging size allowed by the UN transport regulation. On the other hand the polymer industry increasingly uses automatisation to improve efficiency. United Initiators help with new packaging types like IBC's, Bulk containers for organic peroxides, big bags and silo transport for persulfates.
United Initiators are experts around manufacturing, dosing, handling and storing of organic peroxides and persulfates. If you as a major customer want us to look at your ideas for example on dosing equipment for organic peroxides, or big bag emptying stations for persulfates, we are ready to help, or we come with a first proposal. We offer to look at the total application system, we calculate burst disks for tanks that may even contain pre-mixes with other chemicals. When it comes to Initiators, please think of us first!

United Initiators is an international company with its headquarters in Pullach, Germany and operates various sites in Europe, USA, China and Australia.
Hydroelectric power was the reason why the company’s site in the Isar Valley south of Munich was chosen in 1911. A number of clean hydroelectric power stations had been built along the Isar, and Dr. Gustav Adolph and Albert Pietzsch, the founders of the company, used the River Isar as a source of electric power and cooling water for the electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide.
In the course of more than 100 years, the company’s history has been marked by constant and sometimes profound changes: through mergers and demergers, take overs, acquisitions and joint ventures as well as through market and product development and diversification.
Today United Initiators is a global and leading producer of peroxide-based initiators and specialty chemicals and offers a broad range of organic peroxides, persulfates and selected specialty chemicals. The company has several production facilities in Europe, North America and the Asia‐Pacific region.
Milestones in the history of United Initiators
The first 50 years:

Environmental Protection, Safety, Health, Quality (ESHQ)Priority for ESHQ
Environmental protection, safety, health, quality (ESHQ) and long-term profitability are essential and equally important conditions for the survival and the successful development of our company. However, in certain acute situations environmental protection, safety, health, quality will always take precedence over efficiency. These corporate objectives are not mutually exclusive but complementary. Sound future planning includes environmental, energy-efficient and economic considerations and therefore we will continually develop and balance these dual considerations.
Obligatory for All Employees
The company policy is mandatory for every employee and every hierarchical level. All employees are responsible for the implementation of the ESHQ-program. The exemplary role of each line manager is of particular importance in the implementation.
A final standard can never be achieved; neither for the environment, energy efficiency, nor in safety, health or quality. The tasks in these areas grow with the development of the company and the society around us. Therefore both the corporate policy and the resulting concrete measures must be continuously monitored, adjusted and improved.
Environmental protection, energy efficiency, safety, health and quality are corporate objectives to be pursued using similar means and methods. The essential elements of our integrated ESHQ-system include a clearly defined and binding policy, sound documentation, periodic review of standards through internal audits, continuous training of our employees within the personnel development program and an active and open communication of our activities both inside and outside the company.
Environmentally-friendly production and processes are prerequisites for the long-term preservation of the United Initiators’ sites. We are committed to acting in a future-orientated and sustainable manner within the meaning of the Responsible Care Program for the chemical industry.
United Initiators is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001 both to address any possible environmental consequences and to ensure the continuous improvement of environmental protection. The local employees or their representatives are actively involved in the definition of environmental programs and objectives according to the local requests.
Integrated Environment Protection
Integrated environmental protection starts with the planning of new production facilities. It continues with the selection and procurement of raw materials, the development and application of environmentally friendly production, the manufacture of environmentally friendly products, the well thought-through management of waste materials and the selection of environmentally sound transport methods.
The constant modernization of existing facilities and the on-going development of production equipment and processes to meet state-of-the-art technology (“additive environmental protection”) are, alongside the concept of integrated environmental protection concepts, the second important pillar of the ecologically sound development of the production facility.
The impact of current activities on the local environment are monitored and evaluated, and any significant impact on the environment is checked.
We meet not only the legal requirements but also voluntarily exceed them; constantly working to prevent and minimize any environmental impact. We strive to avoid emissions (air, water and soil pollution), to minimize noise pollution and waste and to conserve energy and raw materials.
It is the responsibility of management and each employee to identify potential improvements in environmental protection and to develop solutions for their implementation. The regular internal reviews (“audits”) of all divisions and the on-going training of employees with regard to quality, safety and environmental protection serve to support this process of continual improvement.
Product Stewardship/Chemical Management System (CMS)
The responsibility for our products does not stop at the factory gate. It also includes environmentally sound storage, transport, use and disposal. We therefore maintain a regular exchange of information and experience with all partners – suppliers, dealers, transporters and customers. For us, product stewardship means limiting or halting production and sales of products should information pointing to unacceptable risks come to light.
Arrangements are made guaranteeing external contractors working at the site conform to the same environmental standards as ourselves and that our rules for quality, safety and environmental protection are adhered to strictly.
Necessary measures shall be taken to prevent accidental emissions of substances and energy. Special processes minimizing the impact of any accidental discharges are developed in conjunction with the public authorities.
The protection of the health and safety of our employees and neighbors is paramount. No one may be harmed, endangered or unreasonably disturbed by the operation of our plant.
Minimizing Hazards and Risks
One of the main tasks of management and all employees is to ensure our work is safety-oriented. Our overriding goal is to minimize the hazards and risks associated with the production, warehousing and use of our products. This aim also extends to the safe transport and disposal of goods. It is therefore necessary to take health and safety aspects into account during the development of new products and processes.
Requirements for Safety
Security is based on three key components:
- Qualified staff
- Technical measures
- Organizational arrangements
Only if all the areas are treated with the same rigor and are constantly checked and improved, optimal protection against short-, medium- or long-term risks can be achieved.
Every employee at their individual workplace knows best about the specific problems and opportunities for improvement. Therefore, the involvement of as many people as possible in safety issues, their on-going training, as well as the permanent provision of information about safety-related issues are among the most important tasks of any manager.
Technical security measures should include:
- Automatic sprinkler systems in all fire-risk areas
- Limitation of hazardous material inventory and the smallest possible fire areas
- Concrete cells with blast release areas
- Modern, computerized process controls
Organizational measures include:
- An effective and comprehensive safety organization with competent bodies to deal with all aspects of safety
- The on-going analysis of all risks of a plant (“screening“) and if necessary, the elimination or minimization of the risks.
- The thorough follow-up of each incident, accident or near-accident and elimination of the cause
Safe production and use of our products requires the constant exchange of ideas and experience between all stakeholders. An open and trusting cooperation with the relevant authorities is therefore just as important as on-going communication with suppliers, customers and other manufacturers. This also includes our participation in the drafting of workable laws and regulations.
Globally, the United Initiators’ sites refer to local standard regarding Occupational Health and Risk Management Systems.
The employees’ health, and their ability to work, play an important role in the company’s economic success. Health is closely related to safety, so both behaving in a safe manner in accordance with the safety regulations and a safe plant are prerequisites for protecting the health of our employees.
Only employees who fulfil the health requirements for any particular task are allowed to conduct that task. We actively support our employees in maintaining their health and well-being. An intensive risk assessment provides the basis for preventative occupational medical examinations.
Alcohol and drugs endanger an employee’s own health and that of their colleagues. We therefore enforce an absolute ban on alcohol and drugs on all our sites throughout the company.
