Chemical - In-itu Chemical Oxidation

Verhoeve Environment & Water is market leader within in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) in the Netherlands and Belgium. We have some 10 years experience in chemical technologies for remediation of soils and water treatment. These techniques are particularly suitable for obtaining high decontamination yields in a relatively short period of time (several months up to 2 years) and generally in source areas. In areas where the biological approach of the plume zone fails or can not succeed because of the soil matrix, we frequent put chemical oxidation in as a last resort for the final settlement of the remediation. More and more, this technique is applied where others fail. Worldwide, Verhoeve Environment & Water has 10 chemical units and plants to remediate contaminations. All these facilities are equipped with PLC and are therefore remote controlled.

Chemisch - In-situ Chemische Reductie

A recently proven technique is in situ chemical reduction (ISCR). Verhoeve Environment & Water frequently applies this in soils contaminated with chlorinated solvents (VOCL). It is based on the chemical reaction of zerovalent iron with chlorinated compounds, according to: 2Fe + R-Cl + 3H2O = 2Fe + R_H+ 3OH-+ H2 + Cl-. Verhoeve Environment & Water created a reactive and permeable lightweight material, based on combining zerovalent iron with lightweight clay granules. This product is patented by us under the name Granul-X ® and has already been applied successfully to a number of locations in Flanders. Advantages: better ground water flow, more durable and financially attractive in comparison to standard zerovalent iron. Zerovalent iron can be used in permeable reactive walls, for direct injection on Micro or Nano scale and can optionally be mixed with carbon source. Evidently, it is of the utmost importance that such mixing and injection is performed anaerobically.

Chemisch - Electro Reclamatie

In situ remediation of inorganic contaminations in both unsaturated and saturated zones is possible by means of electro reclamation. Verhoeve Environment and Water has the know-how and owns the patents and equipment to design, deploy and complete complex soil remediation. The technique is based on direct current, using anodes and cathodes to mobilize and remove contaminations. The contaminants are collected and discharged through electrolysis and water treatment.

Anaerobic Degradation

One of Verhoeve’s specialties is conducting biological anaerobic degradation of chlorinated solvents. We have used this technique for 10 years, especially at former laundries. After the potential removal of the source zone, the lower concentrations and the plume zone can be perfectly remediated through a biological phase. Injecting carbon sources and nutrients can stimulate anaerobic decomposition. A carbon source must be well dispersed into the soil and it is best if it has a long time to work (slow release) resulting in the release of hydrogen (H). In cooperation with Deltares in the Netherlands, Verhoeve developed a carbon source that holds both features: VCS ® (Verhoeve Carbon Source).

Electro (Bio) Reclamation

Where chemical, biological or physical techniques fail (for example by loamy or clayey soil) heating can be the solution. Verhoeve Environment & Water has the know-how, patents and equipment for heating of the soil under the influence of alternating current. By placing electrodes with a power unit, heat can be generated in the soil. The warming of the soil increases the biological activity extremely. In addition, the permeability of the soil increases and persistent adsorbed contaminants detach from the soil matrix. Deployment of electro(bio)reclamation guarantees a rapid settlement of the soil and prevents stagnation of the remediation.

LNAPL Remediation (Light Non –Aqueous Phase Liquids)

For over 15 years already, we are active on the petro chemical market where we especially remediate in demanding environments. Our installations are designed and built in close consultation with our (mostly foreign) principals. The installations are HAZOP-proof and often Explosion-safely executed. Our staff is familiar with the customer’s safety guidelines, and for construction and maintenance only own staff with knowledge of the local situation is assigned. The design of such soil remediation (filters, pipework, accessibility) and the corresponding installations are tailor-made. Usually remediation takes place through a multi phase extraction system (AWEX) but also simple skimmer systems are possible. We also provide solar operated stand-alone skimmers with simple accumulators for storage of pure product.

Physical Water Treatment

From our experience in soil remediation contracting, we have a strong vision on the approach of (waste) water flows in different target markets. Iron, algae and salt removal and disinfection are some aspects thereof. Many flows we tackle using physical techniques. We can hereby boast on our large and flexible equipment fleet. For example, we rent out water treatment installations to overcome costs stagnation in case your installation fails or needs to be revised. Verhoeve also has its own 24 hours a day emergency service!

Hormone or drug residue removal? The solution is found in chemistry. If biological or physical solutions offer little to no result, chemical solutions remain. We frequently apply chemical ozone (O3) based techniques or disinfectant.

Legionella Control/Disinfection

Through our experience in working for companies and industrial environments we take care for our customers for legionella or bacterial hazards. For example: Water from coolingtowers, Process water from food industries. Our goal is the preparation of sustainable systems for our clients decreasing the risks of legionella and bacterial growth. Issues like limescale, algae, corrosion and other contaminations can increase the risk of legionella.
