Environmental Monitoring

Woods Hole Group has a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental monitoring. Our core strengths with Port, Harbor & Coastal Monitoring Systems and Offshore Met-Ocean Systems and Moorings are complemented by extensive experience with sediment and water quality characterizations, along with biological community delineation and monitoring. Our field teams are safety trained, and have proven experience working in wetlands, rivers, estuaries, beaches, the shallow shelf, and the deep ocean to accomplish client objectives the first time, avoiding delays and cost increases. Environmental monitoring is accomplished through a combination of desktop research and in situ sampling, along with remote instrumentation and sensing technologies.

Permitting and Regulatory Compliance

Our clients face challenges associated with designing and building projects in a manner that fulfills a myriad of regulatory requirements. Woods Hole Group feels strongly that projects can be implemented in harmony with environmental requirements. We believe that difficult regulatory issues should be addressed early in the project planning process, and it is essential to proactively involve the diverse group of stakeholders. We are not advocates; however, we feel that key project elements need not be compromised when there is sound scientific and engineering data to support our clients" requirements. We work openly and creatively at the local, state, and federal levels, and encourage open-mindedness to gain favorable approvals for our clients’ projects.

Contaminated Sediment Management

Woods Hole Group’s expertise in managing contaminated sediments in marine environments ensures that sediments will not present a complication to coastal and marine engineering projects, such as urban dredging and site remediation. Woods Hole Group performs a comprehensive risk assessment analysis that identifies the extent of contaminated sediments, the potential for physical, chemical, and biological mobility, and the associated human health risks based upon the degree of contamination. Contaminated sediments and local faunal tissue samples undergo rigorous laboratory analyses and the results are then used in conjunction with computer models to identify transport pathways, potential remediation alternatives, and proper disposal or confinement. Contaminated sediment risk assessment is a multidisciplinary task that draws upon the diverse expertise of the Woods Hole Group staff and their abilities.
