(Burst DiscIndicator) Alarm System is designedspecifically for use with ContinentalRupture Discs. It signals the operator ofa system when a rupture disc has burstto relieve an overpressure condition. The heart of the system is the B.D.I.Alarm Strip. Upon disc rupture, the BurstDisc Indicator Alarm Strip is severed, disrupting the flow of electric currentthrough the strip. An attached alarmmonitor can then transmit a warningand/or activate appropriate equipment. The B.D.I. Alarm System should bespecified:• When warning of pressure relief isessential for plant safety• When immediate notice is needed ofrelief of an overpressure or vacuumcondition to indicate processmalfunction• When indication is vital that a rupturedisc has burst and toxic substancesare venting• When emergency equipment mustbe triggered immediately upon discrupture to alter or stop a process• When loss or contamination ofproduct will occur if a rupture disc isnot replaced immediately• When monitoring of rupture discs isimportant in hard-to-reach locationsProven DesignThe Burst Disc Indicator Alarm Strip isdesigned to break when its correspond-ing rupture disc bursts. Continental'sdesign has been proven through years oftesting, both in the field and in our ASMEaccepted flow testing laboratory. Thistesting has proved the reliability of theAlarm Strip when used with ContinentalRupture Discs. The B.D.I. Alarm Stripdoes not affect the life or performance ofthe rupture disc. The Continental B.D.I. Alarm Strip iscarefully designed and manufacturedwith the following features in mind:• Resistant to chemicals and weather• Usable over a wide range oftemperatures• Easily replaceable upon disc rupture• Compatible with standard designContinental Rupture DiscsATEX Directive CompliantThe B.D.I. Alarm Strip and theMTB-700 Alarm Monitor have beencertified for use in “potentially explosiveatmospheres” according to therequirements of the European Union,ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. ATEX typeapproval and quality assurancenotification certificates are available onour website at www.contdisc.com.Typical ApplicationsRupture disc applications which canincorporate the B.D.I. Alarm System areunlimited. They occur in all majorindustries—anywhere quick notice of anoverpressure or vacuum condition andrelease is required.Relief ValvesIsolating relief valves with a rupturedisc protects internal valve parts fromcorrosive media. The B.D.I. AlarmSystem signals when a disc rupturerelieves an overpressure condition, enabling the operator to correct theprocess and restore protection to therelief valve.Installing a rupture disc with a B.D.I.Alarm Strip on the outlet side of a reliefvalve notifies the operator when a valvehas relieved. This is an especiallyimportant application when handlingtoxic or corrosive substances.Processing VesselsRupture discs with the B.D.I. AlarmSystem are used on processing tanksand vessels requiring protection fromoverpressure or vacuum conditions. Thesystem warns when a disc ruptures.Chemical ReactorsWhen processing temperatures andpressures are critical, the B.D.I. AlarmSystem gives immediate warning whenservice is interrupted due to relief of anoverpressure condition.Tank TransportsThe B.D.I. Alarm System signalsimmediately when a rupture disc hasburst, thereby releasing product to theatmosphere.Pipeline Pumping StationsRupture discs relieve pressure buildupin pumping stations caused by blockedpipelines. The system signals as reliefoccurs and can trigger shutdown ofpumping systems.Fermentation VesselsProducts requiring gaseous blanketsto prevent spoilage or productcontamination must be protected fromthe atmosphere. Immediate warning ofdisc rupture permits quick correctiveaction, reducing loss of product andexpensive gases.?Model BB-400A Alarm MonitorThe BB-400A Monitor is a largerversion of the BB-100A.
