The peat is densified and processed into granular and powdered products. American Peat Technology LLC is the leading supplier to the Rhizobia seed inoculant industry which has been successfully using reed sedge peat to carry the fragile Gram-negative Rhizobia bacteria to market for years. BioAPT is a successful carrier due to its ability to absorb and retain moisture and nutrients over extended periods of time and under adverse conditions. It is not uncommon for Rhizobia to survive over one year in a warehouse when carried by BioAPT. When tested with bioremediation microbes the results are typically 2 to 3 times better than with other carriers. Moisture retention is vital for the survival of microbes. BioAPT can be wetted up to 38% moisture and retain its granular structure and strength while remaining free flowing. The product is shipped at 9% to 14% moisture. This moisture is largely chemically bound and is unavailable for microbe growth. The pH of the media is adjusted to neutral through the addition of high quality calcium carbonate (finely ground limestone). This is the only additive used in the manufacturing process. BioAPT has a nearly sterile background environment. This is achieved by the relatively high temperatures (190°F) associated with the BioAPT drying process.
