For the first time, we have an event dedicated to this industry which serves as a conduit to pull all those involved together to move business forward. Auto recycling involves many skills and operations. Whether that’s transporting damaged and end of life vehicles, dismantling for parts or reselling those vehicles for repair, separating the valuable secondary metals for recycling or processing the shredder residues and other waste streams emanating from the process of auto recycling. CARS represents all sectors that make up the auto recycling industry and the visitor has the opportunity to see first hand the equipment that can improve efficiencies and profitability in the yard. CARS is unique as it is yard based and the visitor can see live demonstrations of competitor’s equipment being put through its paces. What better way to find out what’s best for youCARS isn’t only about trade stands and machinery. Within this guide you will find not only detailed information about all the vendors and exhibitors, but also the rich seminar and training programmes which have been organised to inform visitors of the very latest developments in the industry and new techniques for processing the auto recycler’s products.A key theme at CARS is the Green Parts Forum. This forum is made up of experts from the industry, from bodyshops and from insurers. Significant take up by the insurance industry and body shops of green parts could greatly improve used parts usage and is an area where auto recyclers must work together with the repair industry to give the customer what he needs.2015 will see a jump in the recycling target to 95%. How will this be achieved? Advanced techniques for separating shredder residue are being developed alongside improved recycling systems to help us achieve these targets. Whether you dismantle ELVs or operate a shredder, this is one boat we are all in together. Enjoy the show.Safety first CARS 2012 is held in a working environment and as such it is essential that all visitors consider their personal safety. Please read these instructions carefully and keep aware during your visit. Do not approach working machines without the permission of the exhibitor who is responsible to issue you any necessary personal protective equipment whilst you are on their stand. Apart from mechanical and electrical dangers also consider noise risk from machinery operations and airbag detonations. Stout footwear (or safety shoes) should be worn. Do not go passed safety barriers.Children are welcome but must be supervised at all times. You must respond to any instruction given by CARS officials.Alcohol is available at the show but we must insist on responsible drinking. Anyone found drunk or disorderly will be asked to leave.Fire procedure. In the event of fire, make your way to the nearest gate and report to the fire marshall.Smoking is not permitted within the show. Please note all safety instructions on arrival. make sure you know what’s happeningwww.atfProfessional.co.ukIf you want to keep in touch with what’s happening in the UK auto recycling industry, then sign up now for atfProfessional’s free monthly eNewsletter.email: chris@atfProfessional.co.ukLocation of showHills Salvage and Recycling LtdGerrard Place, East Gillibrands,Skelmersdale, Lancashire WN8 9SU4CARS Show Guide 2012We were very pleased when Hills agreed to host the 2012 CARS show as this state of the art, 12 acre site really demonstrates to other auto recyclers what can be achieved if efficiency and professionalism are your goals. This makes the site itself as much an attraction as any other aspect of CARS.Much of the current site was developed on green field land and Managing Director, Ian Hill was concerned that the operation would not lead to any contamination. Ian believes the Environment Agency recognised the approach they were taking and over the years have served more as a partner than a policeman.Hills is a model for modern auto recycling with all vehicles racked and stored on concrete. All areas with public access are clean and crisp and on a par with the best the garage trade has to offer.Throw in friendly, personable staff, with the same standards maintained in the back office and you have a thoroughly efficient organisation. And let’s not forget, efficiency is usually rewarded in the bottom line.Naturally, all stock is computerised which keeps track of those fast moving items that need to be removed and put into stock as vehicles arrive. They use DH Systems for this function. You can visit DH’s stand along with other technology companies at the show.Feeding a site of this size is a hungry business which means Hills need to operate a fleet of 18 recovery vehicles. To keep it all running sweetly requires over 100 staff.Hills are an NSA member and their business is split between salvage, parts and motorcycles. Although they do keep a stock of priced Welcome toCARS is all about moving the industry forward and there could be no better site than Hill’s in the UK to demonstrate best practice in the industry.salvage on site, the bulk is sold through their on-line auction.Parts sales are a major part of Hills business. Apart from counter sales, for the local community, Hills have put a real effort into developing both trade and mail order sales. They have a sales office of 12 staff who man both phones and the internet. A fleet of 6 delivery vehicles cover local deliveries with couriers used for greater distance. They hold a stock of approximately 3500 vehicles on site so there isn’t much they can’t supply.Hills business hasn’t happened by accident. Years of consistent effort, looking at best practice around the world, checking out new methodologies when they appear and keeping an close eye on markets have created this business. We hope you enjoy your visit.above: Hill’s Mangaing Director, Ian Hill, “ It is a great opportunity for us to open up our site to auto recyclers from all over the world.”WeÊcastÊaÊwholeÊnewÊlightonÊpreciousÊmetalÊservicesBASF is a full service provider of precious metals products and services. Their 12 acre site in Skelmersdale is one of the most modern in Europe and forms one of the show’s star attractions. CARS offers much more than your average trade show. Apart from the seminars, training sessions, the social events and the free and easy atmosphere, this is the only show where you can see machines doing what they’re meant to do and that means you get to figure out what will and what won’t work for you. There are three exhibition areas to view at CARS The main hallThis area is under cover and where you will find individual trade stands for companies. There’s also the CarTakeBack challenge in the main hall. Here you will find machines being worked and put through their paces. The ideal place to check out one competitor against another.Big machine areaSome machines are just huge and need a lot of space. The programme has been designed to not only inform but also to focus on increasing your opportunities to improve the efficiency and profitability of your operation. Seminars take place over two halls with a separate area designated for training. CARSSeminar and training programmeImproving your business starts here:Friday 9.30-10.00amAir Conditioning Refrigerants - Dave Kingston, Sales and Technical Manager JAVACEver since the threat to the atmosphere from ozone depleting gases was discovered, the air conditioning industry has worked towards safer and more effective refrigerants. This seminar introduces the latest of these gasses, R1234YF and takes a look at what will be required from the ATF when it comes to treatment.Dave Kingston started with JAVAC in 1990 as an engineer after returning from a 7 year stint in Australia. When waste management started to affect vehicle dismantlers he worked closely with Autodrain to specify and supply recovery equipment; this pretty much became the industry standard. More recently he brought the TEXA range of equipment into JAVAC which has continued to help develop the product range. The latest legislation dictates a more environmentally friendly refrigerant and this now involves Dave in many new aspects of the motor trade. Friday 10.15-10.45amHow to Grow Sales Without Buying Cars- Robert Counts, Counts Business ConsultingRobert will examine ways to grow sales without buying additional vehicles. Filling orders by brokering and selling aftermarket parts has less up front cost and turns quickly. Also selling these other parts makes it easier to buy more cars to grow your sales. However, buying more cars is the most expensive way to grow sales - We’ve brought Robert in from the States and he’s not to be missed if want to increase profits.Robert Counts is a small business owner and currently works with automotive recyclers and towing businesses. He manages owners’ groups that are largely family owned businesses. He does independent consulting on buying, sales, operations, customer relations, financial health and facility layout and design. Robert conducts seminars on sales, operations/production, inventory systems, growing the business, managing difficult employees, managing the family business, and succession planning.Friday 11.00-11.30amTowards 2015 and beyond - Peter Stokes, CarTakeBackPeter will look at a number of developments that will have impact on our businesses as we approach 2015 and Beyond, He will ask questions such as, “Where have all the missing ELVs gone?” and discuss where compliance will bite, as we are required to achieve ever increasing targets.Peter Stokes has been involved with End of Life Vehicles at all levels since 1995. Whilst working as Environment Manager at Volkswagen Group UK Ltd, he represented the Car Manufacturers during the construction of the EU and UK Regulations and chaired a number of industry environmental groups.
