There are 3 types of septic tanks, i.e. the classic septic tank or feces tank, the tank for all domestic wastewater and the septic tank with integrated filter. ? The classic feces tank only receives wastewater from the toilet (the so-called black water). ? The tank for all domestic wastewater receives all wastewater from the house, i.e. the black (toilet) water as well as the grey water. ? The tank with integrated filter is in fact a tank for all domestic wastewater but it has an extra filter at the outlet to stop floating substances. It is mostly used in combination with a biological filter. Quite often only a classic feces tank (black water) is installed, although a tank for all domestic wastewater would certainly be preferred. The ideal type is the tank for all domestic wastewater. The wastewater received by this tank is much more homogeneous allowing the tank to function much better. In this case, the volume of the tank should be larger (see table below). In the following table you will find tank capacity as well as the corresponding number of users for Flanders and the Walloon provinces. BE CAREFUL: different capacity is required for Flanders and the Walloon Provinces. In Flanders you must allow for 300 litres per P.E. for a feces tank and 600 litres per P.E. for a tank for all domestic wastewater and for a tank with integrated filter. For the Walloon provinces this is 300 litres per P.E. for a feces tank up to 10 P.E., and from 10 I.E. 225 litres per P.E. For a tank for all domestic wastewater this would be 600 en 450 litres. The volumes 2400, 3300 and 6000 litres carry the CE label under EN12566-1. Please note that according to this standard, the minimum volume of a septic tank is 2000 litres. This may be the case e.g. for schools, offices, hotels, campgrounds… HOW DOES A SEPTIC TANK WORK A septic tank essentially liquefies the solids in sewage water. In this tank the solid biological wastes are either liquefied or converted into small particles. Some waste is dissolved into the liquid and the biological waste is consumed by anaerobic bacteria living in the tank. These anaerobic bacteria (living without oxygen) feed on the waste and convert it into gasses, small suspended solids and sludge. The gasses dissipate through the ventilation shafts. The remaining solid particles (sludge) sink to the bottom of the tank (that is why a septic tank has to be pumped out from time to time). The smaller suspended particles are washed out to the sewer or to the water treatment system. The lighter particles float to the surface and form a "scum" layer. This scum layer cuts off the underlying liquid from the air, so less smell is formed and the bacteria can do their job more effectively. A septic tank must be large enough to allow the raw sewage sufficient time to dissolve and be digested by the bacteria. This takes at least 5 days of retention time. A septic tank must be constructed with a baffle so the outflow begins well below the liquid surface. That way, if there is more inflow than normal, the incoming liquids cannot flow directly out of the tank without having allowed the bacteria to do their job. A similarly baffled inflow prevents the scum layer, that seals out the air, from being distroyed . To ensure effective performance, no rainwater should be allowed to enter the septic tank. This water can be used as follows: ? To water plants ? To wash cars ? To flush toilets ? … And, subject to the installation of appropriate filters, it can be used for the washing machine, the dishwasher, bath, shower, and drinking water, … Please contact our technical service to calculate the ideal tank volume. HOW DOES A RAINWATER TANK WORK A rainwater tank collects the water coming from the gutter. The tank will gradually fill up. As soon as it is full, the surplus water will overflow into the sewer or into a canal. It is important that the water collected is as clean as possible. Any leaves entering the tank will start to rot and cause an unpleasant odor. By installing a rainwater filter, the number of times the tank has to be cleaned, will be greatly reduced. Several rainwater tanks can be coupled together to obtain a larger capacity. In this case we will provide a PVC coupling screw at the bottom of the tank. A flexible coupling of 1 meter (or, on demand, even longer) will be supplied. It is glued into the coupling screws. Our commercial service will inform you concerning the possibilities to couple. Boralit can also offer tanks which are fully equipped for rainwater recycling. These tanks are available with a volume of 2.400, 3.300 and 6.000 litres. ADVANTAGES OF PE COMPARED TO OTHER MATERIALS ? Because it has a limited weight, even homeowners and handymen can install it ? Because nothing sticks to polyethylene, the tank can be easily and quickly cleaned without having to enter the tank ? It is guaranteed watertight ? The roots of plants cannot penetrate PE ? The tanks are corrosion-resistant All these advantages add up to a longer trouble-free service life. This water can be used as follows: ? To water plants ? To wash cars ? To flush toilets ? … And, subject to the installation of appropriate filters, it can be used for the washing machine, the dishwasher, bath, shower, as drinking water, … Please contact our technical service to determine the ideal tank volume and different parts to get the perfect combination. HOW DOES A RAINWATER RECYCLING TANK WORK A rainwater tank collects the water coming from the roof gutters. The tank will gradually fill up. As soon as it is full, the surplus water will overflow into the sewer or into a canal. It is important that the water collected is as clean as possible. Any leaves entering the tank will start to rot and cause an unpleasant smell. By installing a rainwater filter, the number of times the tank has to be cleaned, will greatly diminish. WHAT IS RAINWATER RECYCLING Rainwater harvesting means that, for different tasks in your household, rain water is used instead of expensive city water This is not difficult. You buy a rainwater tank, places it somewhere in the ground and make a connection with the gutter . After a while is the tank is full of rain water, ideal for indoor and outdoor use. You need, of course, a pump. The rain water must be driven from the tank to the different taps. Depending on your personal needs, you can provide your recycling system of a number of interesting options. Moreover, the cost of such an installation, you get out fast When recycling your water, halves you your water bill According to the most recent studies of the Government we consume an average of 119 liters of water per person, per day. For illustration, see diagram. WHY REUSE RAINWATER Did you had a good view on the diagram above ? Then make the account quickly and you come to the conclusion that your water usage can go down by 50%. A rainwater harvesting system is therefore never a useless costs. On the contrary, over time the system deserves itself and on long term, the lower water bills will spare you a lot of money TABLE OF CONTENTS Boralit products category A – Pretreatment and rainwater Version 2013 V3 - English 11 Boralit N.V. - Nijverheidslaan 12 – 9880 AALTER – Belgium Tel.: +32 (0) 9 375 11 11 – Fax: +32 (0) 9 375 22 22 Site: www.boralit.com - E-mail: sales@boralit.com WHERE USING RAINWATER Typically, rain water is used for the following applications in the household: * Garden * Toilettes * Washing machine Provided that an installation of special filters, rain water is suitable for personal hygiene. A.2.2 THE TANKS Boralit rainwater tanks stand for lifelong comfort. This is already clear at the installation of the tank that, except in the presence of groundwater, can be installed in regular sand. Thanks to a special, reinforced structure with thrust washers, the pressure of the surrounding soil is distributed optimally over the surface of the tank. After placement offers the high-quality high density polyethylene from which the tank is made of other benefits. So is your polyethylene tank impervious to corrosion and cracks and you will have a guarantee of 10 years. Also what maintenance is concerned, polyethylene has a step more, because thanks to the smooth, non-porous inner walls, dirt gets no firm grip on your tank. A cleaning turn calls itself thereby less likely on. And if you need to clean your tank anyway, it is pretty easy to get the job done. Finally, the equipment of the tanks worth noting: by default, your tank is equipped with a waterproof welded riser, which can be supplied with a suction pipe. Of course also lots of useful options are available. It is possible to connect more tanks to get a larger volume. For the series Clearwater (flat tanks) the tanks are welded together, with an opening of 650 mm between. The pump is built into the tank itself, with floating suction. 2. The pump is placed in the home and connected to a fixed or floating suction in the tank Both systems have their own advantages and utility: a pump built into the tank will not be heard in the home, but contains no switching on city water when the tank is empty. A pump placed in the home will often audible but it can be equipped with a switch to city water system, so the efficacy of your toilets and washing machine is guaranteed. The unit detects the lack of water in both rain water and mains collection system and corrects it to guarantee that the system operates correctly (or rather, it never lets the identified users run out of water). Notify in the event of faults and indicate the type of problem incurred. The system is generally limited to irrigation, washing machine, WC flushing tank and floor cleaner systems. The main objective of the Aquaprof system is to give priority to the use of rain water over that of the mains water. When the rain water contained in the tank is insufficient, the control unit passes the mains water supply thereby ensuring a flow of water at the extraction points. The connection between the rain water collection tank and the mains water collection tank, which is integrated into the system, is selected by a three-way valve fitted to the pump suction. The pump operates exactly the same as a pump with a “start-qtop” system using flow and pressure control. When the pressure drops below the set value the pump starts, when the tap is turned off the pump stops, if there is a lack of water the pump stops and a warning is signalled on the pomp’s controlpanel. After a preset time the pump automatically starts again and if all operations are within the set parameters the pump carries on operating normally. The system also includes a special anti-stench and anti-draining trap. The system performs en operational control of the 3-way valve every 24 hours. The system renews the content of the internal mains water every week (the tenewal is limited to the request of water used). The system comprises a recyclable polyethylene console, a completely automatic electronic control unit, three-way automatic valve and electropump Euroinox 30/50 M. Supplied with wall bracket as standard and float switch with 20 mt of cable. ? According to: BELGAQUA en AN1717 ? Protection class: IP44 and IP55 ? This is because more and more paved surfaces are being created (buildings, parking lots, driveways, etc). To solve this problem, there are various infiltration systems, that make the water infiltrate slowly into the ground. These systems have many drawbacks… Therefore, we have developed a system that is able to gather the rainwater. Then, the amount of water is gradually transferred to the sewer or stream. The system consists of a tank with a floater and an airlift. The floater stimulates the airpump and activates the airlift. The airlift is able to pump an average of about 9 liters per minute. To determine the buffering volume, there is one factor that the customer should decide. It is impossible to create a buffering that works perfectly in every particular situation. Therefore, for periods of abundant rainfall, we have installed an overflow. The customer is free to choose, within how many years, an urgency overflow should be installed. This will determine the buffering volume. Several studies come up with the same conclusions: Privately: 10 l/m² peak rainfall(= 15 min) and 14 l/m² (within one hour) For industries: 40 l/m² peak rainfall (= 15 minutes) and 56 l/m².(within one hour) The following schedule shows how big the buffering should be for a roof area of 100 m². Returning period of an overflow ½ year 1 year 5 years Private 1 m³ 1,5 m³ 2,75 m³ Industries 4 m³ 6 m³ 11 m³ For industries our system is not applicable, because the roofs are much larger than 100 m². The installation of a grease trap to prevent the clogging of the pipes, is advisable in the following cases: ? Private dwellings that are connected to the sewer system ? Private dwellings with an individual water treatment system that is not located near the kitchen The size of the grease trap depends on the flow rate discharged and the temperature of the water. Boralit can offer two models, i.e. 300 and 500 litres. HOW DOES A GREASE TRAP WORK The greasy water from the kitchen and/or the dishwasher flows into the tank by means of an anti-splash jet-nozzle. Grease and water will separate for two reasons: ? Grease floats because the density of grease is lower than the density of water ? Once the grease comes into contact with the cold water of the grease trap, it solidifies The grease collects on the surface of the water. At the outlet of the installation a baffle is installed to prevent the discharge of grease. The installation requirements should be read FIRST BEFOR placement. In the event of loss by the customer of the installation requirements the customer must always ask for a new copy of the installation requirements at Boralit nv, or download them from the Boralit Web site. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES IN CONSOLIDATED SAND They apply to the articles under categories A 1.1, A 1.2 and A.1.5, A 3 and A4. Always install the facility as closely as possible to the contamination source to prevent the feeder pipe from clogging and causing blockages (excepted for rainwater tanks). Prepare a pit that is at least: ? 15 to 20 cm broader than the tank (for series ECO RH: 30 cm) ? 15 to 20 cm deeper than the distance between the height of the inlet and the bottom of the tank. (for series ECO RH: 30 cm) See to it that all groundwater or rainwater that might be present in the pit is pumped out before pouring consolidated sand into the pit. The bottom of the pit must be covered by at least 15 cm of consolidated sand of 150 Kg/m³ (for series ECO RH: 30 cm) (*). Level (with a builder’s level) the grease trap in the pit so the inlet is at the proper height to connect to the house drainpipe. Fill the grease trap with water and connect both the inlet and outlet. Provide with correct and sufficiently large ventilation according to the type of unit and always with a minimum of 50 mm. Backfill the pit round the unit with at least 15 cm of consolidated sand of 150 Kg/m³ (*). Always introduce small amounts of consolidated sand, slightly press the sand to prevent distortion of the unit. Put at least 10 cm of consolidated sand of 150 Kg/m³(for series ECO RH: 30 cm) (*) on top of the grease trap. Install the PE-risers, which can be obtained from Boralit, on the unit until ground level is reached, and put the cover on (the grease traps must remain easily accessible for inspection and cleaning). In case vehicles might drive in the immediate surroundings of the installation, a sufficiently strong concrete slab must be installed. The concrete slab should not rest on the tank and should divert the pressure to the ground that has not been disturbed. (*) Please contact us in case of a temporary high groundwater level, and also if the tank becomes more deeply embedded in the ground than is permitted by the PE-riser. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES IN REGULAR SAND They apply to the articles under categories A1.3 and A1.4 Follow above instructions and If there is no groundwater, the consolidated sand can be replaced by regular sand. Please contact us if the tank becomes more deeply embedded in the ground than is permitted by the PE-riser. ? The PE covers are only temporarily. They do not have a safety lock and can not stand the weight of persons or vehicles who might pass by. Make sure you get Boralit covers, to increase the security of persons or vehicles who cross the installation.
