Evaluation, permitting, planning, design, and construction of water supply pipelines are one of the cornerstones of our water resources practice. Our sta? is familiar with the design and performance of steel pipe, concrete pipe, ductile iron pipe, and PVC pipe. We have experience with selection and design of pipe jacking, microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling for installation of pipelines beneath highways, rivers and wetlands, and through congested or contaminated areas.CanalsCanals are the primary structural element for most large scale water conveyance systems. Most modern canals are concrete lined earth channels that convey large quantities of water at relatively low velocities. Th e concrete lining improves hydraulic capacity and at the same time limits water loss through seepage. Canals are the most cost-e? ective means of transporting large quantities of water.Having designed over 500 miles of canal structures, GEI has extensive, relevant, and recent experience in canal design and construction management, earning some of our sta? international recognition for their work.ConveyanceOn behalf of our clients, the water resources practice has planned, arranged ? nancing for, designed, and managed the construction of irrigation projects delivering over two million acre-feet of water to over 650,000 acres of land in the western United States and abroad. Th e projects, valued at over $700 million (at current cost levels), include 750 miles of pressure pipeline, 500 miles of concrete-lined canal, and 150 pumping plants.GEI’s engineering sta? has completed numerous planning and design projects involving water storage transmission and distribution systems. Th e projects have included pipes of various materials ranging in size up to 144-inches in diameter. Services included site and alignment investigations, failure analyses, hydraulic and pipe condition investigations, trench stability and support, seismic analyses, jacking pit design, dewatering, tunneling and microtunneling. Ground conditions ranged from soft mud with boulder obstructions to hard rock tunnels, and have included major river crossings.PipelinesHaving designed over 750 miles of pressure pipelines, GEI has extensive experience in all geotechnical, structural and environmental aspects of pipeline route selection, design and construction.
