Through floatation two solids are divided and one of them floats over a liquid. In moder approach floatation takes advantage of foamers proprierties: solid particles are shaken in a mass of water and foam. Due to different surface properties one of the solids adsorbs more faster the water and it settles on the ground (hydrofilic); the other solid absorbs more faster the air (hydrofobic). The medium density of the solid absorbed with the air is less than the water density and it floats, generating a foam full of mineral which flows out from the container. Floatation allows to separate different substances regardless of their density.
