For such cases GEI has designed many slurry wall support systems. Our extensive experience with design of slurry walls includes being one of the lead consultants for the depression of the Central Artery in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the largest civil infrastructure projects ever undertaken. Th e entire 1.6-mile section of depressed roadway was constructed using slurry wall technology. In some areas the slurry wall extends to a depth of 110 feet.Braced ExcavationsDuring construction of new facilities where open cuts are not feasible, braced excavations support the ground around foundation excavations to control deformation of adjacent structures, utilities, and soil. Braced excavations range from simple sheeting to complex slurry wall projects protecting sensitive and historic structures. Th e excavations can be supported using internal bracing, top down construction where the building ? oors act as bracing, or using external bracing such as tiebacks. GEI balances empirical experience with sophisticated modeling to evaluate the impacts of a braced excavation on adjacent facilities. Using geotechnical instrumentation during construction allows the project team to evaluate actual versus predicted performance of a system and make adjustments to bene? t the project.Tiebacks & AnchorsGEI has extensive experience evaluating tiebacks and ground anchors that are used to support or attach various structures in the ground or bedrock. Th e anchors can be used for temporary or permanent loads, for a wide variety of applications including: • Excavation support systems • Slope stabilization • Dam stabilization • Tunnels • Bulkheads and waterfront structuresExcavation Support SystemsGEI has designed excavation support systems and co? erdams for construction of numerous tunnels, buildings, and other civil works projects. Types of support systems have included but are not limited to cantilever walls, simple braced excavations, tie-back anchored excavations; open-water co? erdams, braced co? erdams constructed in conjunction with existing structures, and pre-stressed bracing for structures sensitive to movements.Slurry WallsConstruction in the urban environment often requires an excavation support system that minimizes movement of adjacent structures and allows e? cient control of groundwater.
