Shell Cansolv – Gas absorption solutions

Leading Regenerable SO2 Control Technology

The CANSOLV® SO2 Recovery Process is the leading regenerable SO2 scrubbing process on the market. This patented technology uses an aqueous amine solution to achieve high efficiency selective absorption of sulfur dioxide from a large variety of gas streams. The scrubbing by-product is pure, water-saturated SO2 gas recovered by steam stripping and the process can be engineered to use low quality waste heat. The CANSOLV® SO2 Recovery Process and absorbent have excellent health and safety properties. The regenerable absorbent eliminates the high cost of consumable absorbents, while its high capacity and selectivity reduce capital costs. Effluents from the process are minimal.Cansolv Technologies Inc. (CTI) has started up commercial units in 2002 in the USA, Canada and Belgium. CTI has a pilot plant that is available for on-site testing and demonstration purposes.CANSOLV® SO2 Recovery Process Applications• Utility Boilers• Fluid Cokers• FCCUs• Acid Plant Feed and Tail Gas• Claus SRU Tail Gas• Metals Smelting and Refining Off-Gases• Chemical Manufacturing Plants• Pulp Mill Blowpit and Boiler Gases SO2 Control TechnologyLeading Regenerable Providing state of the artSO2 control technology REGENERATION COLUMNACCUMULATORSO2 Product99.99% (dry basis)REBOILERLean AmineSteamCondensateHEAT EXCHANGERRich AmineAMINEPURIFICATION UNITImpurities to BlowdownTreated Gasto StackABSORPTION COLUMNWater FeedFeed GasPRESCRUBBERBlowdownLEGENDGas PhaseLiquid PhaseAmine SolventProcess Description1. Feed gas to the CANSOLV® SO2 Recovery Process is first quenched and saturated in a water spray prescrubber. This can also remove some particulates and strong acids.2. The gas is then contacted with the lean amine solution in a counter-current absorption column where the SO2 is absorbed. The treated gas may exit the absorber with an SO2 content of <10 ppmv, depending on design parameters.3. The rich amine from the absorption column is pumped to the regeneration column via a lean/rich heat exchanger for energy recovery. The rich amine solution is regenerated by steam stripping and the SO2 is recovered as a pure, water-saturated product. The lean amine leaves the reboiler and is pumped back to the absorption column via the lean/rich heat exchanger and the lean amine cooler.4. A slipstream of the amine is purified to prevent accumulation of heat stable salts.5. The by-product can be converted to various sulfur products. (See application sheets for details.)Performance Characteristics• Low cost sensitivity to SO2 content of feed gas• SO2 removal to <10 ppm, if required• A robust, easily operable process• Uses standard equipment and engineering• Low maintenance and no solids handling• Energy requirement comparable to regular gas treating amine processes—significantly lower than other regenerable SO2 recovery processes• No absorbent purge required -- heat stable salts removed by reclaimer• Quantity of heat stable salts needing to be removed is much lower than competing processes• Amine degradation losses small• Non-volatile and low toxicity solvent• Small footprint simplifies retrofit in tight sites Process Schematic Providing state of the artSO2 control technologyCansolv Technologies Inc.8475, ave.
