The SBI North American Advanced Biogas
Laboratory (SBI NAAB Lab) focuses on the
development of anaerobic digestion and
advancing biogas technology.
Swedish Biogas International has over 15 years
of experience in anaerobic digestion and
houses an advanced team of biogas scientists
and engineers.
The NAAB Lab supports three key endeavors:
- Research, consulting, and testing for industry
- Research advancing anaerobic digestion technology
- Student and community education
The NAAB Lab capabilities are comprehensive and include:
- Process design for municipal, industrial, and farm digesters.
- Substrate evaluation
- Biological methane potential testing (BMP)
- Process evaluation through lab scale digesters (CSTRs)
- Bio-fertilizer/digestate evaluation
- Biogas analysis
With expertise in co-digestion and optimization of biogas plants, the NAAB Lab
houses the experience needed to be a resource for the implementation of anaerobic
digestion technology.
The laboratory contains automated BMP analysis equipment, reactors for the
monitoring of the process of anaerobic digestion, and analytical equipment necessary
for the monitoring of biogas and bio-fertilizer/digestate characteristics.

Bio-Methane Potential Testing
The methane potential of a substrate is investigated using a BMP test. The methane
potential is the maximum gas production from a certain substrate under optimum
conditions for anaerobic digestion.
BMP equipment used at the SBI NAAB LAB facility consists of: a water bath, glass bottles with
continuous stirring, CO2 scrubbing bottles with NaOH solution and magnetic stirring, water bath with
calibrated flow cells for online monitoring of gas production, and gas sampling valves.
Through BMP analysis equipment, the SBI NAAB Lab is able to predict the methane
production from substrates to be used in a full-scale process, enabling a more
sophisticated and specific process design.

Lab Scale Digesters
The SBI NAAB Lab is equipped with five lab-scale continusuouly stirred tank reactors
(CSTRs) that run similar to a full-scale plant.
The lab CSTRs are used to simulate a full scale biogas process and are a tool of
great importance related to:
? Establishing and optimizing process parameters for the biogas plant,
? Determining full scale gas production,
? Testing new potential co-substrates,
? Evaluating and establishing the need for process additives,
? Establishing the quality of the bio-fertilizer,
? Measuring the energy content in the biogas,
? Determining trace components in the biogas,
? Determining possible accumulation of toxic and inhibitory compounds
? The need for pre-treatment of substrate or biogas
The CSTRs hold a volume of 4 L, and are equipped with heating
mantles, temperature probes, stirrers, feeding tubes, gas outlet
valves, and gas counters

Analytical Testing
The SBI NAAB Lab is equipped with all necessary analytical instrumentation
required to successfully run lab-scale biogas reactors and evaluate the process for
both full-scale and lab-scale digesters. This is crucial to ensure a digester’s health
and to be able to evaluate process changes, such as introduction of new co-
substrates, process additives, inhibitory compounds, etc.
Services include:
? pH
? Alkalinity
? Individual and total volatile fatty acids
? Total and volatile solids

Gas Analysis
The SBI NAAB Lab is capable of analyzing major biogas constituents through GC
analysis, and offers a unique method developed for measuring siloxanes.
Knowledge of biogas composition is important for the design and maintenance of
biogas facilities
Services Include:
? Methane
? Carbon Dioxide
