One Planet Leaders is a flexible training programme that helps companies understand and exploit the opportunities of sustainability. By bringing together world experts, the latest thinking and examples of best practice, the Programme helps participants to develop the values and business processes that characterise sustainable companies. One Planet Leaders isn’t a ‘business as usual’ programme; it’s about transformation. What does One Planet Leaders offer? • Three two-day workshops across three months, providing action-focused learning and opportunities to work towards company and personal objectives; • Online access to programme materials and management tools to develop a Sustainability Action Plan for change within your organisation; • Tutor support and resources available for six months (between workshops and 100 days afterwards) to tailor learning and action to your specific business context; © 2009 All rights reserved WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature One Planet Leaders – Q&A • Opportunity to build ‘One Planet Teams’ in your business that also benefit from learning materials and tools to support your Action Plan; • Membership of the One Planet Leaders Community; • An opportunity to gain an MSc accreditation. Who has developed the Programme? The programme has been developed by WWF International’s Corporate Relations Department with two specialist consultancies working in the areas of sustainability and training and development: Terra Consult and ESD Consulting Ltd. Target audience Who is it for? The programme reaches out to senior and mid career managers who want to make significant and ambitious progress in developing and implementing new or existing sustainability policy and practice within their organisation, as well as their own personal development in this field. Typically delegates include: • Business executives and upper management in core operational functions such as Strategy, Marketing, Sales, R&D, Procurement, Product Supply and also CSR. • Policy-makers and government officials I am not an expert in CR and sustainability – will One Planet Leaders still be of use to me? The programme is specifically designed to be of use for individuals with a wide variety of prior experience of CR and sustainability. For those with little or no previous knowledge, it provides learning and capacity development for any senior manager to understand the relationships between their area of work and the environmental and social issues that are relevant. For those with more previous experience, One Planet Leaders course materials will build upon this and can be used to launch a deeper exploration of specific topics. I am already involved in the implementation of CR and sustainability in my organisation – would it be useful to me? For participants that already work in this field, One Planet Leaders will build upon their skills and expertise and can be used to develop specific responses to existing challenges, build a more formal systematic approach to the management of issues or provide accelerated progress on an issue or challenge that has already been identified. One of the key challenges for organisations in embedding sustainability is in the requirement for sustainability understanding and skills to be built across the business. One Planet Leaders is designed to do this and can, therefore, be a useful tool to individuals looking to build skills and capacities of key colleagues. Key outputs - What will I take away from the workshops? • Increased confidence and capacity to understand and respond to the range of sustainability challenges that face your business today; • Tools and processes for driving sustainable innovation and creating competitive advantage; • During the programme participants translate what they’ve learned into Sustainability Action Plans for their own role and organisation. These also reflect actions and issues of strategic importance to the company as a whole; • Tools and strategies to successfully manage the change that your Action Plans call for; • A powerful international network of peers and experts supporting each other to drive transformational change towards a sustainable future. Workshop content What is the content of the workshops? Workshop I: Sustainability and Your Business Future – A full introduction to, and immersion in, the challenge of sustainability. Together, we will explore the effects of environmental and social trends on the future of your business. We will develop innovative responses that fit your particular organisation. Workshop II: Business Transformation for Sustainability – How to future-proof your business. We examine insights, pathways, meanings and tools that allow the development of business models which are aligned to, not at odds with, changing environmental and social conditions. Workshop III: Creating and Communicating Change for Sustainability – How to champion change across your organisation. We investigate the human dimension, the levers and obstacles to change, and how to communicate sustainability credentials effectively. Do I need to attend all three workshops? You can attend one or two workshops or opt for the Full Programme (all three workshops plus assignments to apply the knowledge to your business) depending on your personal and organisational needs. For the Full Programme, tailored tutor support is available between the workshops and for 100 days afterwards i.e. six months in total. You can also opt to take all three workshops at once or over an extended period of time to fit with home and work commitments. Alternatively, you can attend the workshop or workshops of your choice. This allows a specific focus on the content most relevant to you and additional flexibility in sending different team members to different parts of the Programme. Please note that for Modular participants no tutor support is available after the workshops, nor is access to MSc accreditation. Is One Planet Leaders focussed on conservation? One Planet Leaders is a business programme, using business language and delivered and supported by a range of business leaders and experts in CR and sustainability. In addition, WWF International’s vast experience is drawn on to help you develop personal and business responses. This includes specific expertise on subjects such as climate change, water resources, sustainable business practice, market transformation, international environmental trends and biodiversity management. © 2009 All rights reserved WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature One Planet Leaders – Q&A The programme is thus much more than an ‘environmental’ or ‘conservation’ programme. WWF believes that a sustainable future will only be achieved through a true understanding of the importance of and interrelations between environmental, social and economic issues. How much time will I need to spend on the programme? In addition to the time spent at the workshops, we recommend 4 hours a week for the Full Programme. What happens after the workshops are finished? All participants are invited to join the on-line One Planet Leaders Community for sharing experiences, best practice and ongoing support after the workshop(s) have finished. The Community also offers a regular newsletter and annual event. Full Programme participants also receive tutor support and links to a range of experts. One Planet Leaders Pathway Is it possible to gain MSc Accreditation? Participants who complete the full Programme can opt to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Development from Exeter University in the UK. This option will achieve 60 credits – one third of a Masters degree - which is dedicated to the study of leadership and sustainability within an organisational setting and focuses on the needs and challenges facing contemporary business. The approximate cost for the full Masters in the academic year 2008-2009 is £4000. I am interested in completing the Postgraduate Certificate, what is the time commitment and how much does it cost? The time commitment to the Postgraduate Certificate (PGC) is in the region of 600 hours, although much of this time includes the work delegates have already done on WWF’s One Planet Leaders Programme and the work you will be progressing in your company. Delegates receive credit for how the learning from the One Planet Leaders programme is used and developed. This will be incorporated in three assignments on 'Managing and Creating Knowledge', which are summatively assessed. Delegates will then have the option to receive their PGC or continue on for a Diploma and/or Masters in Sustainable Development. The approximate cost for the PGC by distance learning in the academic year 2008 – 2009 is £1333. Confidentiality How will the programme ensure the confidentiality of my business issues? Confidentiality is a key precondition for ensuring that participants feel comfortable and make the most of the programme. Confidentiality of business information is ensured in the on-line elements of the programme (information that participants input in their learning log and apply phase tools cannot be accessed by any other participant). All workshops follow the “Chatham House Rule” i.e. participants are free to make use of information discussed during workshops, but not to reveal the source of that information, whether the individual or organisational source. As with any other meeting with mixed participants, it is up to the participant to decide which issues they are comfortable to share publicly during workshops. When participants from a direct competitor or a company in a similar sector are already scheduled to attend One Planet Leaders, the Programme Managers will inform prospective participants of this fact and encourage them to make their own choice whether to attend or defer to a later Programme. © 2009 All rights reserved WWF, World Wide Fund for Nature One Planet Leaders – Q&A Programme Fees How much does One Planet Leaders cost? Programme fees include tuition, all learning materials, workshop costs, and membership of the One Planet Leaders Community for 12 months. Travel and accommodation is not included.
