The respirometers discussed here are systems designed for measuring respiration in laboratory-size reactors with any living thing, including microorganisms, plants, and animals. Typical uses are measuring effects of variables, which influence metabolism as indicated by respiration. These systems allow scientists to precisely evaluate the effects of environmental changes, food sources, and chemistry on living organisms. The three common methods of measure used by respirometer manufacturers are electrolytic, gas-composition sensing and the Challenge Technology, patented direct-flow measuring respirometer. All of these systems are capable of measuring respiration rates in relatively small lab-scale reactors; however, ease of system setup, reliability/robustness, maintenance effort and versatility vary significantly.
