RoHS is a self-declaration directive covering the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The regulations came into force in 2006 in the UK. Any electrical product sold within the European Union after this date has to comply with the RoHS Regulations.The regulations ban the placing on the EU market of new EEE containing more than the agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.Who is affected Any manufacturer, importer or distributor of EEE which falls into any of the following categories: • Large household appliances• Small household appliances• IT and telecommunications• Consumer equipment• Lighting equipment• Electrical and electronic tools• Toys, leisure and sports equipment• Automatic dispensersWhat you need to doRoHS is a self-declaration directive which means that you have several options to ensure that you are compliant and should use ‘due diligence’ to implement the most relevant compliance processes.• Product Testing: Companies can arrange for products to be tested to assess levels of restricted substances. Undertaking regular product testing is the most comprehensive approach a company can take to demonstrating their compliance with the RoHS Regulations.• Compliance Declarations: Companies can request a Declaration of Conformity from the manufacturer of each product or component. Due diligence is required when accepting a Declaration of Conformity.• Product Labelling: CE Marking requirements now apply to products obligated under the RoHS regulations. All products which must be RoHS compliant should show the CE Mark.
