Ship Tank Cleaning Case Study

ECOSOLUT 14 Marine CASE STUDY APPLICATION High Performance Marine Tank Cleaning Benefits ECOSOLUT 14 best in class cleaning performance ECOSOLUT 14 approved by the IMO for use under MARPOL Annexe 1 ECOSOLUT 14 neutral ph and very low environmental impact Background OTI Greentech has developed and formulated a range of high performance environmentally balanced cleaning products targeted specifically at the demanding requirements of the marine tank cleaning market. ECOSOLUT 14 Marine has been formulated for chemical marine tank cleaning with full IMO approval. It has been independently tested and given a top class rating in cleaning performance for marine chemical tanks. Independent laboratory tests demonstrated high performance cleaning capability, which led to a major shipping company wishing to test and adopt the product for vessel tank cleaning. The 45kMT DWT vessel has 16 cargo tanks all coated with zinc silicate coating. A reformate cargo was loaded and subsequently discharged. This was then followed by a methanol cargo. Results At the request of the shipping company an independent laboratory was asked to assess the performance of the leading tank cleaning chemicals. This assessment judged ECOSOLUT 14 Marine to be the best available cleaning chemical for the removal of hydrocarbons from zinc silicate tank linings. On the strength of these test results the shipping company decided to run a commercial trial on the vessel. The objective of the trial was to demonstrate that there was no loss of product efficacy in commercial operation. Application conditions Tank cleaning was carried out in all cargo tanks with the following steps: ? MARPOL Annex 1 washing. All tanks 1 to 8W for 45 min at ambient temperature using sea water ? Purging cargo tanks 1W to 8W to reduce LEL ? Hot sea water (65°C). 3 hours per tank ? Chemical washing, recirculation with sodium hypochlorite 1% (100 litres) and ECOSOLUT 14 Marine 0.4% (40 litres) in seawater. 3 hours per tank ? Rinsing with hot sea water (65°C) 3 hours per tank ? Rinsing fresh water ambient: 30 minutes per tank ? Gas freeing 12 hours per tank. Results The vessel completed the cleaning in six days and loaded / discharged the methanol successfully. Walls of the tanks were then tested for Methanol. In summary, the vessel cleaned from CPP to methanol in zinc coating, without any manual tank entry for cleaning.
