Sustainability is GAF business„Our business goals are inseparable from the societies and environments within which we operate.“As a leading earth-science applications company, GAF has always been accepting its share of environmental and social responsibilities. We are proud to have a variety of measures in place in our day-to-day operations, which proactively help to protect the environment. Our values and goals unite us - management and employees - as a company.We commit to:"minimising the environmental impact of our everyday work, e.g. by saving energy, keeping our CO2 emissions low,and continuously improving our environmental performance."Computer hardwareGAF almost exclusively buys its computer hardware from Fujitsu because it offers a broad portfolio of environmentally friendly products and uses itself environmentally friendly technologies and processes throughout a product life cycle. Fujitsu Computers is member of the "Climate Savers Computing Initiative", "Green Grid" body of organisations and the "Global Compact" initiative of the UN. One of the main Fujitsu Computers manufacturing bases is in Augsburg, Germany.Hardware disposalThe disposal of our hardware is handled by a professional company which cooperates with one of the largest enterpri-ses in the region training and employing people with handicap. The hardware is dissembled with the aim of maximising the material recovery for recycling and to dispose of the harmful substances in the best possible manner. Toner recyclingAll our used printer cartridges get disposed off by professional companies which sort the material for reuse and recycling. One of our partners donates part of the income generated by recycling towards social projects by Caritas.Paper consumptionThe GAF office functions are organised via an intranet system, which substantially helps to reduce paper and energy consumption. Further measures to ensure sustainable material usage and to reduce material wastage are:- Prints for internal use are made on recycled paper- Brochures, flyers and other professionally printed marketing material is printed on FSC certified paper by our local print company, which is climate neutral partner i.e. member of an accredited program to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated by its activities- Paper towels and toilet paper used are made of recycling tissueEnergy consumptionWe are operating exclusively with green energy. More and more of our servers are now virtual, thus energy is saved substantially and hardware performance is increased. To cool our server rooms, energy-efficient air-condition systems have been installed. Besides, GAF uses multi-function devices for scanning, printing and copying to save space and energy. Travel and transportationWhile on business trips, the GAF staff is requested to use public means of transport whenever possible. To avoid business trips in the first place, our video conference facilities within the company allow for interactive communication. On a day-to-day basis, more than three-quarters of the company staff use public transport and/or bicycles to travel to and from work, due to the good connection of the company’s premises to the local public transportation network. The four cars owned by GAF are all special models with high fuel efficiency to reduce their environmental impact. Last but not least, our marketing partners are all local businesses.
