In close collaboration with UNESCO’s programmes and key partners the centre focuses on trans-boundary water management in connection with peace, conflict and regional development. The centre is academically delivered in partnership with the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Uppsala University, Sweden. The International Centre for Water Cooperation is the first Swedish UNESCO centre.GOALS AND OBJECTIVESDrawing on the rich transboundary water research tradition in Sweden, the centre will, amongst other things, establish a research school to carry out applied research and academic training. The centre will provide advisory services to governments, intergovernmental bodies, research institutions, academia and think tanks. In close collaboration with UNESCO’s programmes and key partners, the centre will generate multi- disciplinary research on the linkages between transboundary water management, peace and stability. In tandem with the development of new research, significant efforts will be made to strengthen the links between applied research and policy implementation. The centre aims to ensure that research results are put to concrete use by policy and decision-makers.ABOUT SIWIFounded in 1991, the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a Stockholm-based policy institute that generates knowledge and informs decision-making towards water wise policy. The transboundary team at SIWI performs research, builds institutional capacity and provides advisory services to governments and other international actors related to shared water resources.APPLIED RESEARCHThere are no geographical limitations to the centres research. Topics to be addressed are (but not limited to):• What type of cooperation over transboundary waters do we see today? • What is the quality of the cooperation being established? • What indicators are available to measure the quality of cooperation? The centre will also create networking hubs for international researchers and build capacity through dedicated training programmes.
