Don’t let the profit hidden in your wastewater go to waste. Abanaki oilskimmers cost effectively reclaim oil from wastewater. As heating billsclimb, you can save energy costs by burning your reclaimed oil, or youcan sell it to a recycler. That’s not all. In most cases, Abanaki products make the waterclean enough for discharge. Instead of paying disposal costs, reclaim your oil with an Abanaki oil skimmer.Abanaki’s Model 82 is a dependable and effective means ofremoving free floating oil from water and water-base solutions. When used with an oil concentrator, the amount of water in theoil can be reduced to less than one percent in most cases, mak-ing the oil suitable for burning in a waste oil furnace or boiler.Waste oils that can be burned for heat include almost any oil upto 50 S.A.E.: metal cutting oils, lube oil, crankcase oil, transmissionand hydraulic fluid, #1 and #2 diesel fuel, vegetable oils and grease.Using an oil skimmer, companies can collect up to 40 gallons per hourof oil or grease from wastewater and burn it for free heat.Skimmed oil can be supplemented with used oil from other sources within anindustrial plant or even from outside sources. Companies can accept free wasteoil from other businesses that will be happy to avoid more costly means of dis-posal. Yet another source of waste oil is the recycler, who sells it for a fractionof the cost of fuel oil.OIL GRABBER®Heat Your PlantWithYour WastewaterUSA: 17387 Munn Road • Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44023800-358-SKIM (7546) • (440) 543-7400 • FAX: (440) 543-7404UK: Unit 13 • Avondale Business Centre • Woodland Way • Bristol BS15 1AW0117 9616679 • FAX: 0117 9616687www.abanaki.comEnvironmentally SoundBurning waste oil is an environmentally sound alternative thatprevents oil from entering the watershed, which is why the EPAsupports it. Technically, the EPA term is “used oil” rather than “wasteoil” (a term reserved for hazardous waste), but most people call itwaste oil.Oil recycling is more common than people think. After it is collected, nearly 89 percent of used motor oil from vehicles is recycled for useas industrial fuel or space heating. Because it usually has a thickerviscosity, used oil possesses more energy than #2 fuel oil. A typicalgallon of waste oil contains 163,000 to 240,000 BTU - more than twicethe energy value of LP gas or coal.Of course, not all oil is collected for recycling, and waste oil finds itsway into sewers, streams, and landfills. One quart of waste oilcreates a two-acre slick on surface water, and a gallon of waste oilcontaminates a million gallons of drinking water. Companies thatskim their wastewater and recover their oil for burning are helpingthe environment at the same time they are reclaiming a valuableresource. Model 82Waste Oil HeatersWaste oil furnaces are engineered specificallyto burn used oil, but most can burn standardfuel oil as well. Models range from small unitsused to heat automotive service garages tounits up to 500,000 BTU/hr (the EPA limit with-out a special permit). A conventional furnacewith a combustion chamber may be convertedto a waste oil furnace, or a separate unit maybe installed. In addition, waste oil boilers areused to supply hot water for radiant floorheating, greenhouses, truck and car washes, and industrial processes. The conversion/installation is relatively inex-pensive, and it pays for itself in recoveredenergy savings. In addition, because burningwaste oil for heat is considered recycling, thecost of the heater may qualify your companyfor tax credits. Contact your state EPA officefor information. For burning waste oil, there are three maintypes of equipment. Which type you use for oilrecovered from skimming depends on theamount of trace water remaining and yourparticular situation.Vaporizing type heaters are small, simple andinexpensive. Often there is no thermostat con-trol.Atomizing heaters use compressed air and pre-heat the oil providing more complete, cleanercombustion. There is little odor and no smoke. The low pressure type is used in new equip-ment, and the high pressure type is useful forconversions.CIS heaters (Combustion Incineration System)will burn oils not usable in the other heaters, including ethylene glycol and non-flammableliquids like water. It too uses compressed air toatomize the fuel, and it is ideal for conversionsbecause the flame characteristics more closelymatch a conventional heater.Maintenance typically includes vacuuming outresidual ash and sometimes cleaning the noz-zles. Some units have a reusable oil filter thatmay need occasional cleaning by rinsing in asolvent bath.Oil SkimmerOilOil ConcentratorScreenWaterWaste Oil Furnace OIL GRABBER®Model 82Enjoy the Benefits of Oil Skimming• Most inexpensive way to remove oil from water• Saves coolants by removing tramp oil• Conserves parts wash water by removingoily wastes• Prevents plugging of spray heads and filters• Reduces fluid disposal costs• Skimmed oil can be recycled and reused as a lubricant or fuel• Helps meet government requirements forwater dischargeGeneral DescriptionThe Abanaki Model 82 is a dependable andeffective means of removing free floating oilfrom water and water-base solutions. In somecases, skimming by itself will reduce oil to anacceptable level of water purity. The unit canbe used as a pretreatment before filtration, and in conjunction with coalescing systems. The Model 82 utilizes a continuous belt andwiper to remove up to 40 gallons of oil perhour from the fluid surface. The belt, operat-ing on a motor and pulley system, runsthrough contaminated liquid to pick up oilfrom the surface. After traveling over the headpulley, the belt passes through tandem wiperblades where oil is scraped off both sides ofthe belt and discharged. The tail pulley hasflanges which allow it to roll freely on theinside of the belt without becoming dislodged. It requires no bearings and does not need tobe fastened to the tank. If turbulent conditionsexsist, an optional tether and cage assemblyprevents the tail pulley from being dislodged. The Model 82 Advantages• A single unit elevates and separates oil• Lifts oil any distance without the need ofexpensive pumps• Maintains skimming efficiency withfluctuating fluid level• Can be used in depths as shallow as onefoot, or as deep as 100 feet• Requires no tank modifications in mostapplications• Operates in turbulent liquid usingoptional tail pulley cage and tetherassembly• Easy mounting and fast cleaning, withminimal maintenanceModel 82 shownwith optional tailpulley cage andtether assembly.Skimmerman™Go WithThe ProOil skimming makes use of the differences inspecific gravity between oil and water. Thesephysical characteristics allow the belt to attractoil and other hydrocarbon liquids from the sur-face of the fluid. The Model 82 can be used intanks with depths as shallow as one foot, or asdeep as 100 feet.Where To Use The Model 82The Model 82 is the most widely used Abanakiskimmer. Its size and removal capacity make itsuitable for most applications. From a mereshimmer on top of water to a heavy oil slick, the Model 82 performs efficiently, removing upto 40 gallons of oil per hour. Typical Applications• Wastewater sumps• Parts washers• Coolant systems• Heat treating fluids • Food processing plants• Parking lots, garages, and service facilities• Outdoor ponds, lakes, and basins• Underground tanks• Ships’ bilges• Aircraft service areas and tarmac runoff• Truck, locomotive, and other mobileequipment washing facilitiesRugged Construction for Harsh ConditionsThe Model 82 is designed to last for manyyears. With the proper configuration it canhandle liquid temperatures up to 212°F, andthe pH of the fluid can range from 1 to 13.Belts are made of corrosion-resistant steel, carbon steel, elastomer, and a specially engi-neered polymer. The skimmer drive includes anoil filled gear reducer with bronze gears andball bearings. The motor, reducer, and powdercoated finish of the weldments give the Model82 exceptionally long life, even under theharshest conditions.OIL GRABBER®Model 82Model 82 with flatmount in useKey Features of the Model 82:• Requires only a small area in the tank or sump• Easy mounting• High temperature capability• Chip resistant powder finish• Hazardous duty and food grade options• Custom designs and turnkey systemsavailable• Fast cleaning with minimal maintenanceTail PulleyOptionsWiper AssemblyDetailMinimum required openingfor tail pulley only or tailpulley with yokeMinimum requiredopening for tail pulleyyoke & retainerOIL GRABBER®Model 82Model 82 Flat MountModel 82 Channel Mount Abanaki’s Oil Concentrators®The Oil Concentrator® is an option availableon all ABANAKI oil skimmers. Under mostoperating conditions ABANAKI oil skimmerswill pick up oil with less than 5% water. Butas surface oil is reduced to a thin layer (1/16to 1/8 inch thick), more water or coolantmay also be picked up along with the oil. When used in tandem with the oil skimmer,an Oil Concentrator will solve this problem, and provides virtually complete oil/waterseparation, saving money and improving theefficiency of the skimmer.Based on the principle of gravity separation, the Oil Concentrator uses no electricity, timers, sensors, pumps, or other movingparts. The Oil Concentrator sits behind theskimmer and receives its discharged oil. Theunit comes complete with a mountingbracket, removable sludge screen and adrain plug to ease clean up. For higher vis-cosity oils or low temperature applications,a thermostatically controlled heater is avail-able as an option.
