BHS partners with Napa Recycling for RNG facility
Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has partnered with Napa Recycling and Waste Services and the city of Napa, California, to develop and operate an anaerobic digestion and renewable natural gas (AD-RNG) facility at the Napa Recycling and Composting Facility.
The AD-RNG project uses Zero Waste Energy's Smartferm Plug Flow system to recover energy content from Napa's existing organic waste stream in the form of biogas.
The RNG produced will be used to fuel Napa Recycling's fleet of waste collection trucks, with an estimated annual generation of up to 500,000 diesel gallon equivalents of compressed natural gas, sufficient to power approximately 50 heavy-duty waste collection trucks or equivalent high-mileage vehicles per year. The facility can also provide RNG for electricity generation to support electric-fleet transitions if local regulations require electric-only refuse and recycling fleets.
Eric Herbert, president of Zero Waste Energy and Bulk Handling Systems, states that the project will virtually eliminate methane emissions from organic waste disposal in the service area and will replace fossil fuel derived gas with RNG generated onsite, delivering a circular solution.
The existing composting program at the Napa Recycling and Composting Facility will continue. A portion of incoming organic waste will feed the anaerobic digestion system, while the remaining solids will be diverted to the established composting system.
