Maui upcycle launch
Our Maui Upcycle facility will be commissioned in 2021!
Maui Upcycle is designed to fulfill our corporate mission to divert organic material from landfill disposal, create regenerative soil products, and encourage sustainable resource recovery practices.
Maui Upcycle will use our Harp Accelerated Bio-digester (model: CX10) to convert 1 ton-per-day of food waste into natural soil regeneration products, and thus divert over 300 tons-per-year of organic material that would otherwise be buried in the Central Maui Landfill. The recovered organic materials will be upcycled into valuable soil products (approx. 90 tons annually) to support healthy soil regeneration initiatives on Maui, and reduce the island’s carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions.
Maui Upcycle integrates innovative bio-technologies with environmental stewardship to advance sustainable solutions.
Implementing sustainable waste diversion practices not only reduces the environmental impact of conventional landfill disposal but also recovers a valuable soil regeneration resource to enhance our local ecosystem.
Our holistic approach to managing our resources is intended to honor the efficient design of nature and support the Hawaiian stewardship principle of malama’aina (to care for and nurture the land).
Every day hundreds of tons of waste material are deposited in the Central Maui Landfill. Organic waste, including food waste and landscape clippings, comprise the largest percentage of this material. When organics are buried in a landfill, the decomposition process produces greenhouse gas emissions that can damage our environment.
When organic material, such as food waste, is managed correctly, it can become a regenerative natural resource that provides valuable nutrients to create healthy soil.
Stay tuned for project updates and additional information!
