Patent for Perchlorate Bioremediation Granted
The US Patent Office has granted a patent for bioremediation of perchlorate-contaminated media to Michael Saul of CL Solutions, Cincinnati, Ohio and Andrew Irwin of Irwin Engineers, Natick, Massachusetts. The patent is based on the successful application of a novel approach to in situ bioremediation of nitrate and perchlorate in soil, ground water and sediments at a site in Massachusetts.
The in situ bioremediation reduced the concentrations of perchlorate in ground water from 480 ppm to less than 1 ppm. The ground water was treated in unconsolidated silty clay overburden and granitic bedrock.
Soil concentrations in the source area were reduced from 1,800 mg/kg to less than 1.0 mg/kg.
Application of in situ bioremediation saved the responsible party hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of treatment time. More information is available form CL Solutions at www.cl-solutions.com
