AlpHa - Ion Selective Electrodes (ISE) in Wastewater Treatment
Municipal and industrial wastewater facilities measure ion concentrations upstream, on-site at the treatment facility, and downstream to meet government regulations. Specific ions play a large role in identifying the performance of wastewater biology, efficient use of treatment chemicals and energy, and odor control of the effluent. The following ion-selective electrodes (ISE) are examples of critical ions measured throughout the wastewater treatment process: Ammonium, nitrate, potassium, chloride, water hardness (total calcium and magnesium), ammonia.

Wastewater applications measure a variety of ions in the field or as grab samples in a lab. Remote stations require multiparameter sondes that continuously measure ion activity, log data, and transmit wirelessly. ISE application challenges in wastewater include sensor biofouling (algae coating) and reference junction contamination. These challenges can be mitigated with the optimal sensor design, in particular the reference system and housing material. AlpHa’s proprietary ISE portfolio can target over twenty different ions which are designed for both lab and continuous process environments.
