Bio Acoustic Fish Fences (BAFF)

SHARE

Our Bio Acoustic Fish Fence (BAFF) is a non-physical fish deterrent that produces a linear barrier, guiding fish away from water intakes. Customised sound signals, directional strobe lighting and an air bubble curtain provide directional control. The BAFF also provides operational benefits by significantly reducing operational costs through a reduction of fish mortality.

We designed the BAFF system to comply with UK Best Practice recommendations and US legislation, helping our customers to maintain “green” credentials.

A BAFF system can be considered as being similar to a conventional angled physical screen, but uses an air bubble curtain  containing a selected a signal to create a “wall of sound”(an evanescent sound field) that can be used to guide fish in a river or lake.

Our BAFF systems are primarily used to guide downward migrating fish (such as salmonid smolt) around structures such as dams and into fish passes, away from the entrance to a water channels, so they remain in the main river.

The systems can also be used for other applications, including blocking a river to prevent the migration of fish (such as Asian carp) or for guiding fish towards fish collection or census stations.

  • Enables fish passage and migration
  • Suitable for hydro-electric intakes, channel entrances and blocking movement of invasive species
  • Range of site and species-specific technology available
  • Precise fish guidance (into specific channel)
  • Can be combined with other systems
  • Optimising plant operational efficiency (e.g. no loss of hydraulic head for hydropower owners)
  • Significantly reduces risk of blockages by debris
  • Lower capital costs compared to mechanical/physical screens
  • Lower environmental impact compared to mechanical/physical screens
