Profiling floats are providing unprecedented sampling of the global oceans through the international Argo program and others. With the maturation of float platforms, the opportunity to expand the array of floats to include biogeochemical properties has arrived.
Sea-Bird Scientific (comprised of Sea-Bird Electronics, WET Labs, and Satlantic) now offers a full suite of sensor systems and platforms for profiling float-based biogeochemical (BGC) research. Bolt-on style BGC sensor systems for profiling floats were developed by Satlantic and WET Labs, in close coordination with key scientists. Headlined by the Bio-Optical Sensor Systems (BOSS), these systems offer various configurations of integrated multispectral radiometry, scattering, beam attenuation, chlorophyll and CDOM measurements to complement the temperature and salinity data of the floats. Individual sensors for UV nitrate (Deep SUNA) and optical oxygen (SBE 63 Optical Oxygen Sensor) are also available.
