Unlike conventional glycerolysis, SmartMod™ is carried out by reaction of the FFA with glycidol to form monoglycerides, which are an integral component of the transesterification process. The glycidol used reappears as `extra` glycerol and effectively converts the FFA to biodiesel ensuring full yield of biodiesel from all waste oil feedstocks.

The process benefits from being easily trialled and tested on-site and is production volume insensitive. This is achieved with existing plant and equipment with minimal expenditure. Operational production parameters and revised methodologies are provided by Ceimici Novel.

Contrary to current methods of FFA reduction, SmartMod™ is a totally homogeneous, irreversible reaction at 80-120°C that does not produce water (or use methanol).

Unlike pre-esterification or glycerolysis, SmartMod™ uniquely reduces the free fatty acid in all feedstocks to a level of <0.2% under atmospheric reaction conditions of 80-120°C and is complete in 30-90 mins.

SmartMod™ allows both batch processing in currently installed equipment or can be done continuously thereby minimising operational expenditure and increasing throughput.

The resultant reduction in moisture content using SmartMod™ means there is no further processing before moving on to the transesterification stage.
