Ultrasonic discharge measurement

At least two ultrasonic transducers are installed so that acoustic signals transmitted between them run diagonally to the flow.

The acoustic signal running against the flow has a longer travel time than the acoustic signal running with the flow. The difference in travel times is directly proportional to the flow velocity and, when the cross section is known, directly pro- portional to the discharge.

Single path system
When a pipe is rotationally symmetrical and contains no bends, and the flow conditions are constant, a single path system is sufficient for an accurate discharge measurement.

Cross path system
When the velocity profile in pressurized pipes is disturbed by rotational asymmetry or by elbows in the pipe, a crossed path system is recommended for the ultrasonic discharge measurement.

Multiple level system
In non-uniform offset pipes, Y-branch pipes, or in pipes which are bifurcated, it is impossible to achieve a discharge measurement with any of the above described configurations. In these cases, Quantum Hydrometrie recommends a multiple level, crossed path system in order to ascertain the discharge despite the varying velocities found in the complete pipe diameter.
