GEA BischoffDioxin and Furan Separation

SHARE

Polychlorinated dibenzodioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) occur in very small concentrations in the off gases of several industrial combustion processes in a temperature range of 200 to 400 °C. A typical dimension of the concentration of these substances within the off-gases is 2 to 4 n/gm³ TE*. This organic contamination is extremely toxic, is not decomposing in the nature and is polluting the food chain. The substances are cancer-causing and are a high risk to health of the human population. Therefore, this contamination of PCDD/F has to be reduced by a professional and effective emission control system. The official emission value is limited to a maximum of 0.1 ng/m³ TE.

GEA Bischoff offers technologies to separate PCDD/F below this official limit value, which are already installed and proven by many reference plants worldwide.

Dioxin Separation via Absorption

Within the sorption process the affinity of the organic molecules to adsorb on related sorbents is used. This could be activated carbon, lignite coke, special lime and zeolite. The easiest installation is a series connection of transport reactor and the GEA Bischoff bag filter which reaches a separation level for dioxin and furan of up to 99 %. A variant is the fixed bed absorber which is an alternative installation for lower gas volumes.

Catalytic Dioxin Separation

Usual catalysts for NOx removal include also oxidative properties and can destroy organic molecules. Therefore, also GEA Bischoff SCR-DeNOx plants can be used for the abatement of PCDD/F.

* The concentration for PCDD/F is related to the gas condition ‘normal temperature and pressure of dry gas’ and is valued as toxicity equivalent (TE).
