The SC40 drifters are designed to monitor seawater current flow at sea surface, oil spill trajectories and has to be equipped with a drogue to not be affected by the surface current.

NKE Instrumentation proposes 3 models:
- SC40 A: data are collected by Argos satellites, position is achieved by Doppler effect computed by CLS
- SC40 AG: data are collected by Argos satellites, position is acquired by a GPS receiver and transmitted via Argos
- SC40 IG: data are collected by Iridium satellites, position is acquired by a GPS receiver and transmitted via Iridium
