F&J - Model RA40V -Charcoal Canister for Radon Testing
The container for the charcoal is an all-metal 8-ounce can. The nominal dimensions on this can are 4 inches in diameter x 1-1/8 inches deep. The top of each completed canister is sealed in place using a 13-inch strip of vinyl tape. Red vinyl is available as a standard. Other types of tape or specific colors can be supplied upon request.
The charcoal is held firmly in place by a stainless steel screen, which fits, snugly to the inside of the can. The fit precludes loss of the 6 x 16 mesh charcoal particles around the edge of the screen. The screen provides an openness of 30 to 50% with opening size selected to prevent loss of grains of the charcoal. The screen is held in place by a removable, internally expandable ring, which fits, into the groove in the perimeter of the can. The ring and screen is of sufficient stiffness to hold the charcoal in place during shipping and handling, including dropping from heights of 3-4 feet onto a concrete floor. A piece of foam material, approximately 4 inches in diameter x 5/8 inch thick is attached to the inner surface of the lid to help keep the screen in place by placing slight pressure on it when the lid is on the can. A very porous filter paper is provided below the screen to prevent loss of charcoal dust during transportation.
The container is filled with 70 - 75 grams of activated charcoal. The charcoal has low radioactivity content. Gamma emitters must be less than 0.1 picocuries per gram except for natural potassium –40. EERF acceptability of the charcoal is received prior to utilization of a batch to fill containers. During packaging of the charcoal into cans, all work is performed in an air-conditioned (low humidity) environment and done as quickly as possible to prevent loss of adsorptive capacity of the charcoal due to uptake of moisture.
The finished canister may, upon request, be identified only with the manufacturer company name. The user leaves the top of the can unused as a location for affixing an identification label.
The completed canister is shipped to the customer clean and suitable for deployment into homes or other buildings. The canisters are suitably packed for shipment to prevent damage, which may result from rough handling of shipping cartons. Cartons weighing more than 50 pounds are generally shipped on pallets or other steps are taken to prevent damage to the canister.
