FishFlow - Fish-friendly Axial Pump
Axial pumps are the most commonly applied type of pump in the Dutch pumping stations. These pumps are used in a wide variety of pumping stations, from small pumps in ditches to the pum-ping station at IJmuiden, the largest pumping station of Europe. Although frequently applied, axial pumps are amongst the most dangerous pumps for migrating fishes, Especially small axial pumps are known to have very high mortality rates. Recently FishFlow Innovations has developed a fish-friendly axialpump in cooperation with Nijhuis Pompen.
Many pumping stations appear unsuitable for the application of conventional facilities for fishmigration. The fish-friendly axialpump offers a suitable solution. The pump has a impeller which has especially been designed to pass large objects. To upgrade existing pumping stations the fish-unfriendly impellers can easily be substituted by the new impeller without changes to the existing pump infrastructure. In test runs the fish-friendly axialpump has proven to have a high capacity. Furthermore the axialpump has proven to pass 100% of eel and 97% of course fish undamaged, also at high speed.
The fish-friendly axialpump was invented by FishFlow Innovations. The development and production of the pump was done in cooperation with Nijhuis Pompen.
